i've got 2 female african brown geese...i know they are both female as they both lay eggs... i don't have any african ganders...what i don't understand is why they are always mating??? i mean heavy duty mating...i have got to get a gander...here is a pic
goose question?
I went through the same thing with Lucy and Ethel, two toulouse. I didn't get it either. I just figured they were gay.
Maybe its like when hens crow like a rooster in the absence of a real roo. They take over the male role. ??? I dont know. Jyl...LOL
My ducks do that too. As a matter of fact, my Pekin duck used to lay down flat everytime I approached her! Then when the other ducks got a little older, they started "mating" with each other. They are all females!
Ditto! I had a pair of Pekins that would hop into the pool and there was always one on top of the other! Maybe it's a pecking order?
I think it's biology.
It'll be interesting to know if the behavior extinguishes when you get a gander... my turkey hen was imprinted on me and strut and putt as he might, the tom couldn't get her to look at him.

thanks for all your input here...seems like certain groups do this but i've had my chickens for about the same amount of time i've had these geese and have never seen 2 hens go at it...yes on the trying to crow thing but no trying to mount each other...now the roo...buddy he's one for sticken it to ya...that dude doesn't miss a beat mounting those hens...we call him the 3 second man...we've got pekins and mallards that also do the same sex mounting thing...here's a pic of mr big stuff just after mounting his harem...
