Eagle Nest Poultry

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Any of you ever order from them?

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

No, what are you ordering? ;)

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I am going to order 25 Black Sex Link pullets. They are $1.30 each. Straight run ( as hatched ) are $1.00 each. Cockerels are .50 each. $5.00 handling charge for orders less than 100 chicks. Shipping charge for up to 99 chicks is $10.00. If my calculations are correct it will cost me $47.50 for 25 pullets. I have never bought chicks by mail before. Is that a good price? A friend of mine has bought chicks from Eagle Nest Poultry for several years and is very satisfied with them.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

I have never used them though. I have never ordered chicks by mail either. Maybe someone else has. ;) Good luck!!

Ferndale, WA

That is an excellent price. I could not find their price list after googling the web site? How did you find the price? Haystack

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I phoned them and asked for a catalog to be sent to me in the mail It has all the prices.

Thanks Cajun, I'm going to call them. I was surprised at how many years they have been in business. Again, I really appreciate you passing on the info.

Cajun! Have you ever thought about ordering maybe fifty-100, and then selling anything above what you don't want to keep. That would pay for your keepers. I was telling Sew that I have been ordering twice what I want for myself and selling the others. I have had so many buyers just off of Craigs list that I just ordered another 100 chicks. Most of my customers don't want to mess with day-olds, so I raise them until they are six weeks old and sell them for six bucks per chick. My customers love it, they aren't set up for day olds and don't want to deal with the death of babies. It has been working well for me. Just a thought. Haystack

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

That's a great idea. There is a flea market near here and I'm sure I could sell them. I'm gonna give that a lot of thought. Thanks.

Hi again Cajun! Well I finally got ahold of Eagle Nest and they are sending me a catalog. I told the lady you should get some free chicks as a new salesperson. She just laughed. When are your pullets due to arrive?
I got lucky I think, I found a lady in the area who had a little giant Inc, she only used it once for quail eggs. Her hubby left her and so she wanted to sell it, I paid ten bucks for it. I took it home and set it up and withing half an hour it was holding at 99-101 steady. I left it going for three hours and it held temp excellent.

AT the price of chicks from Eagle Nest, I'm not sure I'll use it very often. That way I don't have to deal with all the Roos that hatch out. Back in Nov I hatched two babies on Thanksgiving day and two days ago they were in a battle of who could crow the loudest. Both roo's Bummer Dude. The one has very long legs and I told my D W I was going to buy her a set of heel's and she'd be the chick of the flick, Now she begans to crow. What a let down. Gorgeous legs LOL. Haystack

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Sounds like you have my luck with the roos. 4 out of 7 time before last. I'm afraid I am 2 for 2 with last one. I hope I am wrong.

That's a great deal on your bator. You can use it to play around with some other breeds.
That reminds me. I need to go turn my eggs. TTYL

Just MHO, but if you decide to accessorise the LG and can only afford one--go for the egg turner and not the fan. I have 3, two with fans and one without. The one without works just as well as the others as long as you keep the temp at 102 and not 95.5 like the forced air.

Edited to change 202 to 102.

two hundred and two degrees?!!!!

Lodi, United States

Whoops! Not. 102!

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

That's how hot I like the hot tub to be. Who knew I had such in common with an incubating egg! LOL

Hi Catscan!! The little giant has a fan, It's called the little giant forced air inc. How does an egg turner work in them? Is it a seperate unit insert or what? Keep temp at 202??? That sounds like chicken dinner, not chickens you hatch. I know, you really meant at 102 rather than 99.5. LOL Thanks Cat. Haystack

So Cajun your a Hot Tub Chick Huh! Shssssssh, does D H know?

Cajun how many eggs are presently in your Inc? How long does it take to turn them, and does it have any negative effect on the hatch rate? Between you and Catscan I had a great laugh tonight. Thanks Haystack

Hi Haystack! The turner and fan are both upgrades and cost about the same--around $50 each. But the turner is awfully useful unless you can hang around home for 18 days. It is a separate unit that you just place in the incubator and plug in separately. There is a new model egg turner--the old one used to burn out regularly--but they still sell both, so if you buy one make sure it is the newest model.

I am slightly numerically dyslexic--so it is a miracle I hatch anything:0)

Well your alright in my book, Ya made me laugh. Thanks for the info. Hay

I love the hot tub. Wish I had one. I only get to enjoy one when we sray at a hotel that has one. We used to do a bit of traveling before we aquired our zoo. My old muscles would sure love a hot tub at home.

I have 23 eggs in my hot tub... I mean, my incubator. I can turn them all in less than 1 minute. I have them in 3 lines and I roll them a line at a time by moving the whole line with the last egg in line. They may be dizzy little buggars when they hatch. LOL I don't know much about incubating other than what I have read. This is the first incubator I have had and the first time I have used it. I hope I am doing it right. I am keeping the temp at 102. I am keeping the water reservoir full and I am turning the eggs 3Xs a day. Does that sound about right?

Ferndale, WA

That sounds like your right on, I read that if a person could turn them four times a day it would be better, but most people I talk with tell me three times a day. My little Brinsea three egg inc, turns them every hour, but in the book that came with it they said the eggs would turn every three hours, so go figure. Every three hrs would be four times a day.??? I also read from a person who said he incubates for a living that he only turns them twice a day. Who really knows. I have always heard that refrigerated fertile eggs would not hatch, but I just read under the omega thread that one guy was hatching fertile eggs that had been in the frige for I think he said two weeks.???? You got me. It seems like every time I think I have it figured out someone throws in a Monkey Wrench. I remain uncommitedLOL. Hay

They generally say to turn them as often as possible--at least three times every 24 hours--at regular intervals. Most books suggest always going for an odd number of turns, so that the eggs don't sit in the same position every night.
But I have also heard that it may be better not to turn them the first day or two since the blood vessels that are forming then are very delicate...and some people say that you don't really need to turn them after day 16 instead of after day 18.

This is day 6 for my eggs. I have thought I might like to candle them but I'm not sure how to go about it. Any help would be appreciated.

This is a website that may help. Many people use a maglite some just a plain flashlight. I roled up black construction paper and used a flashlight in the dark to look through the egg. It is very cool. I actually could see them move inside the egg. Just be so careful, its easy to drop the egg when trying to do this. Have fun. Jeanmarie

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I tried to candle my eggs but my light was not bright enough. Oh well, they are hatching now so we will see.

Cajun: Don't keep us in suspense! Whats happening are we pipping? Zipping? or what? Talk to me, Cajun, Cajun, are you there? CaaaJunnnn can you hear me? $#@&*! Answer me Cajun.

I demand some Pic's of your seramas to. Pleeezee. I'm telling ZZ's on you.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Seramas??? Somebody say Seramas??? Boo Boo Babie Seramas? Oh how cute will that be!

I'm sure if she's a first time mom, it's gonna be hard to post.. I know I had a hard time.. even though I posted every 10 minutes it seems.. LOL

They are hatching? Oh yeah!!!!!! Good for you Cajun!!!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Any baby pics?

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I ended up getting 9 chicks from 12 big brown eggs and 1 blue egg. 4 of the big brown eggs didn't hatch and none of the bantams hatched. My roo must be a dud. But he's a pretty dud. LOL I also got 5 mixed big stock chicks from the market and put with my day old chicks. They are all doing fine. I had 1 croppled chick I had to keep apart from the rest for 2 days but it is fine now.
