It's hard to believe it's been a year since Red's passing. I come across his name often when searching for photos and notes in PlantFiles, especially for pepper and tomato entries.
I have an offer to make in his memory, here on a forum I know he enjoyed...
I got a few 'Big Red' bell pepper seeds in a trade and grew out some plants for my 2007 garden. Before his untimely death, I'd been planning to send Red a couple of seedlings, grown from the last of my seeds.
These peppers did rather well in my garden, much better than my usual run of luck with bell varieties. But the main reason I'm planning to include them in this year's pepper patch is as a memorial to a remarkable and generous man.
I purchased a bulk packet of commercial seeds to send out this spring. Most have already gone out during the pepper co-op and in other offers. 5 packs remain for this offer. This is an open-pollinated variety, so although there are only 10-12 seeds in these sampler packs, you can save more seeds to share and plant in future gardens.
No postage is necessary. I don't want to wait for SASEs; I want to get these sent right out so you can start them. I plan to send them in a regular envelope to save on postage. I've been doing that recently with tomato seeds, taping the pack into the center of the envelope, and so far they've arrived safely.
I posted an offer thread here and one in the canning forum. The first 10 people to post on either thread and then Dmail me with their addresses will get these seeds. Dmail me by noon tomorrow, and hopefully they'll go out the same day.
It shouldn't have to be said, but if you already got some of these seeds from me, please do not ask for more. I'd like to spread these around. :-)
Hopefully, these peppers will do well in lots of gardens, and people will save seeds, so if you missed them this year you should be able to find them for next season!
Let's remember Big_Red by growing some BIG RED PEPPERS!

Well, I would love some. I am too new to have known him tho, so not sure I should pipe up here. However, I have been waiting for the right Bell Pepper seeds to show up and would love to try these. I will promise to save as many as I can from the fruit... Dmail on its way. -- Kyla

I think I sent out 60 or 70 packs of seeds, so even if only a few of the people growing them out this year save seeds to share, there should be a lot of Big Red Pepper seeds available on DG next year! I'm going to try to put a couple of plants away from the rest of my pepper patch, so they won't get cross-pollinated. :-)
