Finding malanga

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

Just wondering at what type of ethnic market would i find a malanga? I looked at Woodman's in Madison yesterday, a huge grocery store, and all they had was celery root and a couple other things that weren't malanga. I'd love to have a couple to start, if I could just FIND them.

What would I get if I planted a celery root bulb? Not regular celery, would I?? Sorry to be so ignorant on some of these things...........But all I really want is a malanga. LOL

Would you believe I saw malanga for sale in Walmarts produce section the other day? We also have a few international/asian markets here that sell them. I have ben growing them for a few summers from the market. They end up being all different colors, etc.

Hmmmm............might it be a regional thing??? I'll have to look next time I'm in a SuperCenter. I get all my beef roasts there. Not one where I live..........yet.........will be this summer, closest one is 20 miles away. Not far, tho. I'll check. Thanks.

they are just in our regular grocery stores here, but they are commonly sold in Latin American markets as malanga or yautia. In Asian markets they are sold as eddoe.

Publix stores is where I have bought mine.

Don't think there is a Publix here up north. I will investigate a few of the WM Supercenters. Maybe I'll get lucky. I need some luck again. LOL

Found the elusive malanga!!!! Driving through Belvidere, Illinois last Sat. and we went by Fiesta Market. Sounded pretty Hispanic to me, so I had Spousal Unit stop on the way back home. Yup, had 'em. Only $1.29 a pound..........I got 2 nice ones. They don't appear to have any wax coating on them, I kinda scratched on one with my fingernail and it seems to be ok. So, I will stick them in a pot of soil in the next day or two. Looks like each of them have what will be a root sprout starting on the bottom. Wish me luck.

I think they like very warm soil to sprout. I just treated my last two years' malanga bulbs as annuals. Here was one from 2007.
