Can emerging bulbs handle a freeze?

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

I have a lot of bulbs that I purchased last fall from Old House Gardens (allium, tulips, hyacinths, fritillary) and we had some unusually warm weather in late February that I'm afraid screwed up my little bulbs internal clocks! There are lots of sprouts and a few of the bulbs (I think they are the allium) are over 6 inches tall. Some of the hyacinths are upwards of 3 inches. Just foliage. Will my bulbs be okay? We are supposed to get a freeze tonight and since it is March in Chicago, this weather could very well keep up for at least another month. I have covered the big ones with overturned clay pots since I'm paranoid now. Help!

Anne, not to worry bulbs are resilent. A week ago I had snow, all my Tulips welcomed it. Then yesterday our temp. was 80 F. degrees. go fiture! Anyhooo, your bulbs will be just fine. :-)

They'll be fine, not to worry. My bulbs are early too, and it was 9 degrees Sunday night. They can handle it.

Ahh, thank you. This was my first year planting bulbs and since I bought such nice heirloom varieties I'm very eager to keep the little guys alive! I will post pics in spring once everything is up. Can't wait!

Hi from the land of Chinooks. Ditto, spring bulbs are very resilent.

on the other hand, when we had a week of very late freezes one year, I did cover up emerging buds on my lilies and other later bloomers... but spring blooming bulbs should be fine
