SEE MY NESTING BOXES
WOW..... I see the hen saddle on one, how is it working out?
LOL.. I looked at the picture and saw the dog crate which we used many times for nesting boxes.....and the covered kitty litter boxes we picked up a yard sales... I did eventually see the hen in the spiffy wooden nesting box.
Ginger needs a break.....
Ginger
That looks very nice! Did your DH nail into the edges of the hardboard to put the front retaining edge on, or did he use glue?
HE USED 1 1/2 STAPLES.
Missjestr the saddles work great
Thanks, Green! I have relayed the info to my DH.
OK.. Ginger want to know what a hen saddle is...and where is it in the picture.
Is this a new game like Where's Waldo?
Ginger
greenhouse_gal my dh said to tell you the staples were put in with an air gun.
beadmom if you look at the picture of all the chickens you will see a black one that has stripes on her back, that is her saddle, she has no feathers on her back because of the rooster,I have saddles on four of them but some are hard to see from the angle I took the picture.
Hey Green Tell D H excellent job. I can tell you are so excited and we are excited for you to. Hay
Those are great!!! The chickens look excited too. :D
Cool nest boxes! How fun when they are all filled up.. :) Makes the morning chores fun.
A HA! I see it!
The chicken saddle..... for to keep her safe when she's being ridden.....
Ginger
Ginger! Chicken saddles are only necessary when RUDE DUDE"S won't remove their spurs. LOL
I forgot Green, What kind of chickens are comming in May? I just ordered some new White Rocks, and some Black Austrolorps and they also are due on May 2nd.
I have 10 golden comets and 10 aurcana(I thinkg thats how you spell it)Do you know if the aurcana eggs are large eggs?In pictures I have seen along side other eggs they look large in size. And are they just light blue or shades of green to.
I think most true Araucana lay smallish eggs--at least mine have been and Araucana are not large birds. But Ameraucana/Americana/Easter Eggers (different "breeds" that also lay blue/green eggs and are sometimes also called Araucana) can lay large eggs. ZZ has some from blue eggs that were enormous.
My largest eggs are from the Ameraucanas - you can not close a jumbo egg box over them!
My girls are laying small green eggs, but they just started... They are the Ameraucana's I think... I get confussed...... They dont have tuffs but sure are pretty.
Well I only have eight Americaunas and none of them lay what I call a large egg. I'd class them as medium. All of my eggs are green, though I know they do lay blue, and even light brown eggs. I am no authority on the easter-eggers, but I would love to see some of Maineiac's super large eggs. Maybe when he's sleeping LOL. Hay
Hay-
I don't know if it is just these white Amer's that lay the big eggs or if most tend to lay them. Mine are just under a year old, and they seem to have been running larger the longer they lay. If you want to get a close look you don't need to sneak in here when I'm sleeping (I sleep with a gun), but I can send you some as they are also prolific and I already have my incubator full of the next gen. What do you have to trade? I can get some out to you if you want them. PM me if interested.
I just found out what the deal is on the egg color of Amer's, if you bust open any Amer. egg it will be the base color of sky-blue on the inside, the outer coating depending on the hens genetics will be a range from olive-green-blue. You can use sandpaper to rub through the coating and it will be bluer as you sand it more. Thought that was pretty interesting...Scott
My blue hen is probably just an EE.. she came from a hatchery, so I doubt she is a true Ameracauna.. even with the muffs & beard. She lays a greenish/blue egg, but she just started laying so it's small.
I am looking forward to the chicks that came from the blue giant eggs to grow up and start laying.. I'm not sure of the breed, since they were just a gift from friend who gave me a whole flat of various types of eggs.. ducks included.. (didn't develop) but these were giant jumbos..
Maineiac, are your hens true Ameracaunas? If so.. I'm on a mission here.. LOL I love the blue eggers..
Z - I'm not sure if they are true or not, I didn't realize there was a designation for them. I have heard of the Araucana's being referred to as true. Mine have muffs and beards, and my roo came from Pips and Peeps who breed Ameraucanas for show. Can you tell me more about the differences between the true or otherwise that I can look for?
Hi Scott. It sounds like yours are probably true Ameraucanas. There was a thread where someone (I can't remember just who right now) gave really detailed information about the breed. Moxon also gave a site recently with an explanation of the differences.
I just assume mine aren't, although they all look alike and have muffs.
