Sorry, can't tell from this pic. Probably an escaped cagebird of some sort. Do you have any other pics? Ideally one from the side. You can post it on the same thread, by replying here.

This isn't exactly from the side, but a better view of the head

Thanks! That's enough of a view of the head pattern to clinch it: Gray-crowned Rosy Finch. Good one to get!

Be nice to add your pics to BirdFiles, here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/birdfiles/go/595/ as there's no photos of the species on currently

Thanks Resin!

LUCKY YOU, the Gray-crowned Rosy Finch has been, number one, on my want to see list for over a year. They spend the summers on the mountain tops all through this part of Alaska. Too high up in the mountains for me to climb. There has been a flock wintering on the Homer Spit most of the winter, but that is nearly a 300 mile drive each way on icy winter roads. So I just keep thinking, "Maybe someday".

I didn 't see it here in Texas....my son lives in Alta, Utah and sent the picture to me. He sent pics of a Cassin's finch and Red-Breasted Nuthatch all in the same viewing! Lucky him!

Looked up, Alta, Utah certainly lives up to its name - at 2600m "alta-tude" ;-)
