spring is here

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Yes down here in NE Florida it is 80 for the second day in a row. This is after freezing last week.
I took the plastic down from the shade house-after almost having heat stroke-it was 100 in there. Today March 9th I feed my epis for the first time this season. There is already a lot of growth. Some are large enough to bloom but I may have to wait another year. Darn!!!!

the Easter Cactus has put out a 3rd bud.

I only have a couple of plants in the epi house that where damaged by the freezing weather . Can't say the same for my yard plants there is a lot of dead plants out there

Just get a e-mail that the epi I ordered back on 2-22 was mailed to day.

Lets here a up date on how all y'all plants are doing!!!

I am still planning a trip down to Bob Smoley's probable next week. If and when I get down there I will take pictures and make a full report.

Wow Sandy, that sounds great. I moved my plants out friday, but I may end up bringing them in one more time. I hope not though. I haven't fed anyone yet, but lots of babies have started putting out new growth. It remains to be seen, what survived under the plastic and some things won't begin coming up until the soil warms a little more. Anyway, it definitely looks like spring!

I do have a great crop of weeds. LOL

Marks, MS(Zone 7b)

I moved some of the epis out friday. Its supposed to be as low as 38 at night a couple times in the next couple weeks, but I think the epis can handle it. I'm leaving the rest of the plants in till I know it won't be too cold. All the epis look good, but there are a lot of other plants that aren't looking so well. Hopefully they will come back from the roots, as other years I have brought out stuff that looked completely dead and brought it back to life. Other things will have to be chopped and cut, like one of my cactus that looks half dead with some life to it. I'll just cut off the alive stuff and reroot.

A number of the Epies I planted this winter/late fall have not rooted yet. They are staying green but show no signs of roots after several months in soil. Is this normal??? bob

It has been for me for the past couple of years. I usually start rooting them in November and then by late december/early January, I move them inside and then when spring comes they go back out. Usually by summer, they have all rooted and are ready for larger pots.
I haven't ever tried to root them any other time though. Maybe there is a faster way.....

I am not an expert but in my exprience the epis root much faster during the growing season.
