Hardiness zone?

Social Circle, GA(Zone 8a)

I just looked up my zone on the Thompson Morgan site. When did my hardiness zone change to 8? LOL Is that right?

Lawrenceville, GA(Zone 7b)

THey did recently update the zones due t climate change. Not sure exactly when they did it.

I think it depends on what map the vendor uses. The National Arboretum still uses the old 1990 map. http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/ushzmap.html

While Arbor Day Foundation uses the new map they created in 2006. http://www.arborday.org/media/Zones.cfm
Theres a link on the left that shows the changes between the 2.

Anyway, all us former 7b people probably planted zone 8 plants anyway, just to push the envelope. Try it and if it survives...

(Zone 7b)

beclu727 "Yep" that would be me always trying something new hopeing it will survive LOL

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

The line between 7b and 8a may be a smooth line on the map, but in reality it will be a very jagged line. Some folks because of windbreaks etc may have slighly cooler temps than folks a couple of miles north of them. Actually there was a good natural indicator last week for Georgia. Those of you who got snow count on being in zone 7.

Social Circle, GA(Zone 8a)

O. I got close to 8 inches. I was 7a not too many years ago. Rather strange to jump a whole one....

(Zone 7b)

I've never really thought about what zone i live in i'm a goof when it comes to gardening.
I plant it and if it lives through the hot summer and survives the winter i'm happy LOL

Lawrenceville, GA(Zone 7b)

LOL

So just how many plants have met their demise at your hands Harmony? :-)

Oh i don't know i just love gardening and each year i find things i just can't live without last year it was cone flowers.
They are all still liveing but one and the ants got to that one but my favorite that only last for the spring and a little of summer are the Delphiniums.
My garden is my paint palate i never know what beauty it will be painted in from year to year i have something new and different every year.
I inherited my Grandmothers green thumb only problem is it didn't come with instructions so i just play it by ear LOL ^_^

Harmy I am like you if it strikes my fancy I go for it.

Back on the zoning. The plants you can grow also depends on Micro climate zones. I live on a slight hill. It is usually 5 to 10 degrees warmer than the house across the street. Also I live in between a river and the ocean and that also effects the climate zones in my yard. Thought the subtropicals that I have grown for over 20 years where frozen this last winter,

(Zone 7b)

Hey Wren what you up too?

Social Circle, GA(Zone 8a)

Thanks all! I think I will plant and tend as if I'm in 7.....if desert sages start surviving here? LOL I keep saying I'm going to do a limestone bed and protect it during winter...

I finished my fourth plant bench. Waiting for the joints for bench number 5 and6,next month will finish number 7 the last one. I set up the potting bench which was the first bench I made and nearly killed my self moving stepping stone to put it on and carrying large pots to dump the soil to level the spot out..

Also I have 3 epiphyllums with buds on them and one Easter cactus with buds. I get a couple of cutting in and have I think 5 more on the way. Also planing a trip down to Bob Smoley's to buy epi, Easter cactus and some named Christmas cactus. I think the count on the epiphyllums that I own is now 210, and one Easter Cactus and 20+ Christmas cactus. I do not know what the number will be once I get down to Smoley's!!! LOL
Cleaned the weeds out of two of mylarge pots. And am thinking about starting seeds. It is the 80's here.

I think I will take it easy the rest of the day.

I will pop in here every once in a well to see how Y'all are doing. Down here we are a mixture of Florida and Georgia so both Forums fit.

Here is a picture of part of my newest plant bench. It is 4 shelves high. 4 ft long and 20 inchs wide. I make it for my basket types.

How do you get the epi's to bloom? I have 6 or so, and the only one I could get to bloom was the white night blooming cereus. So I gave it away and work on the others....ready to toss them out!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Ok first only feed 10-10-10 one a month, except in Dec, Jan, and Feb when you either do not feed at all or only 0-10-10 also cut back on water in winter. The epis need more water than other cactus,so do not let dry out for very long. I water 3-4 times a week depending on weather and if in a clay or plastic pot. In clay need to be watered more often. Here are a couple of web site with info one growing them.

http://www.epigalleria.com/care.htm this is also one of the 2 places I buy cuttings from.

The picture is what I am feeding right now. it is 10-10-10

Thanks wren! I have one labeled only as "fishbone epi". Any clues?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

The fishbone epi is treated the same as other epis. Could be one of these 2 hope this helps.
