Black spot on rooster comb

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

My Barred Rock roo has a black spot on it about the size of a quarter. It looks like mold or something and is starting to show on the other side too. He wont let me get close enough to take a photo, but if you need me to I will try to get one.

What could this be and what should I do about it?

Thanks!

It could be avian or fowl pox. Does it have a grey margin? Are there any other spots? It sounds like a pretty big lesion.

Sure would be easier to identify with a pic.. I agree.. sounds like Pox.

That is a huge lesion. I sure hope he is okay. I believe the referance thread has a lot about the pox. I have never delt with it at this point. I send you my best ascholz. Let us know how you make out.

Could it be frostbite?

Does it seem like it is healing? Or has it gotten worse over the last couple days? Did it look like blood or a sore?

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

it is growing slowly and is begining on the other side.

It could be pox--but it seems a little odd for that. Pox usually starts as small grey rimmed spots that gradually grow and sometimes coalesce. It looks like that one is more diffuse.

Here is the other side.

I wonder if it's a fungus or something? Doesn't look like Pox to me.. Looks more like an injury. You say it's spreading? Strange one that is!

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

It looks like it spread straight through the comb! I wish I knew. Do any of the others have anything like it at all? I am sorry I am not much help.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I searched and couldn't find anything specific to the comb other than Pox and blue comb disease.. (Turkeys)

Keep us informed Ascholz... this is a good one.

I am trying something called Vetrx in their water. Will let you know if that works.

I thought that was for respiratory? You might try rubbing a bit straight out of the bottle on it. Says in the instructions to use it for show birds, etc.

Here is a link.. ?
