Vertical Stackers - Questions

Crestview, FL

Ok, with my lettuce there are 40 of them, with my spinach there are 50 of them and instead of using 10 EBs I was thinking vertical stackers. I was looking at the NJ stacker as it is self watering, does it have 40 or 50 sites on it? And how does the self watering work?

You need to call and ask Bob, he would be the only one that could answer that for you.

I did, waiting for his reply. In the meantime, darkmoondreamer, how did you plant your lettuce? Your spinach?

You should probably just wait for his reply or phone call, instead of making a thread, it would be hard for any of us to give you the dimensions/watering explanations of Bob's stackers, and he always checks his voicemail. Bob, are you hiding from Joy, LOL? . I bought 15" stackers for my salad greens and he advised no more than 2 heads per spot. I have no idea how many spots they have....I guess 3 each.

Karen: I just pulled out my hanging grow bags and am going to use those, just lying them down instead I think. They should be fine, they have 10 plant sites per bag on 4 of them, and 8 plant sites per bag on 4 of them. That way I only use maybe one EB for lettuce, one for spinach and two for my cabbages tomorrow. I'm going to plant my carrot seeds also in one EB tomorrow. I'm really angry with Jung's as they were supposed to have sent my candy apple onions by now they should be already in EBs. I will have to take the time to call them and ask what is up with that. Feb 18th was the plant date for them and I still haven't gotten them; but, I've paid for them.

Right now, I can plant, the cabbages, carrots from seed, lettuce and spinach, I'm still a bit early for cukes, which is supposed to be April 1st but they should be okay in a hanging basket as when we get a frost coming in, I can yank the basket and take it inside the greenhouse for protection. We have at least one more good freeze coming this way this month. But, I will be prepared this time, as I'm not going anywheres for at least 3 more months.

So; tomorrow is planting day for me

This is my Stacker from BocaBob and I planted twenty-four strawberries in them a few weeks ago and they are doing fine. I used Dynamite fertilizer mixed in and turn them a quarter turn every day. Have not lost one!

TPlant: Those are only 2 weeks old? Hmm, maybe I should try that dynamite fertilizer you are talking about, my little sister just got strawberries on hers, me, still no berries, just flowers. LOL

Hey, Bob!
Got 5 EBs done yesterday. That was a COMPLETE breakdown, cleanout and plant. I reused all the existing potting mix, and mixed the coco coir in at a ratio of 4 shovels of potting mix to 3 shovels of core. I used just about 2/3 the block of core, and filled 5 EBs. Have enough core and potting mix left over to fill approximately one more EB and two eBuckets. Not a bad yield at all!

I emptied all my EBs of the mix and will now use coco coir as soon as the construction inspector approves the modifications. They sure take their time coming around. I thought construction was slow all over the country so what are the inspectors doing? I was told yesterday two more weeks after getting an OK, he put a hold on the approval? Well melons can be planted March-April here and my peppers will go in direct so I should be OK. I have a fan on them to help harden them off.

Tplant, do you know how long you have to keep taking off the baby strawberries? I have some Tri star like yours. D

Supposedly for the first season!

Ted, life is too short!

Pembroke Pines, FL(Zone 10a)

I know it's tough but the second season will bring huge rewards! The berries will be bigger and the plant healthier. You can leave a few on to taste. That should keep you happy.

Ah...okay. But I have some second season everbearing that will make me VERY happy in the meantime.

TPlant: Should have just brought them over to my place, second thought, that might have been too much for them. I put all my startings outside today to harden them off, and lo and behold, I had placed them on my little table with the chairs out on the deck, well, a strong wind came along blew the umbrella which was not open and toppled the whole thing, table chairs and my startings. I ran out so fast and scooped the babies up and put them right back into their homes and rushed them inside, I knew it was windy today, but they were doing good waving in the wind til the table toppled them all over onto the deck, some were destroyed; but most came through unscathed. Hmmm, maybe that means they are pretty strong and healthy. I beginning to think if my plants make it to maturity it's because they are strong and healthy with my clumsyness around. LOL
