My ground is unfrozen in the top couple of inches but still frozen below that. Is it too early to plant peas? I am itching to get out there and plant.
Dumb question about peas
Still too early if your ground is frozen below, I feel the same way this time of year
I live in 8a and alot of people don't plant peas in ground until May here...peas thrive best in hot weather...
I mean English peas, darkmoondreamer, not cowpeas. We can't grow cowpeas up here really.
Oh, sorry hon, didn't know..
My seed packages all say peas can be planted in the Spring as soon as the soil can be worked. (Maybe we have different seeds up here).
nope that is the mantra for English peas. Frozen ground however is not ground that can be worked. It means after the ground thaws and drys abit. Southern peas are different thing entirely. Unfortunately if you just say pea, we southerners only think of southern peas.
WE just plantd our english peas about 3 days ago. I waited a little later this year because I had to replant last year from them staying in the ground too long and rotting. I have been itching too to get out there and work, and have been out there all week LOL
Around here the adage is to have peas in the ground by St. Patrick's Day. Other cool weather crops like spinach and lettuce could go in then, too. I usually don't have my beds ready that early. This year twelve inches of snow just melted, although it 's in the seventies today and the ground is now totally unfrozen. Quite a range of weather in one week!
A problem with the ground being frozen underneath is when you get a heavy rain it doesn't drain into the soil. This causes soil to wash or stand in puddles.
Agree and that is why folks are having problems with their seeds rotting. Never had a problem where total thaw has occurred and the ground has dried out. They just can't tolerate sitting in cold mud.
Hi lglavish. Since we're in the same town when do you put in peas? My raised beds seem to be thawed but after wakeing up to snow this morning I'm not sure:)
