I have noticed that bluejays seem to be hanging around one of my bird houses and I catch them going in and out in the mornings and evenings. Then when I was outside doing yard work the other day I decided to take a look inside the box. There is already a nest in it! I know I cleaned it out this past fall so it has been built sometime since then. The only thing is I forget what bluebirds make their nests out of and I thought I would check with you guys. This nest is mostly made of sticks with a few feathers here and there. I was thinking that was more like a chickadee nest but I may be remembering it backwards.
bluebird nest question
here's a list. you said blue JAYs in your first sentence, was that what you meant???

No I meant to say bluebirds. Thanks for catching that Mrs_Ed. Come to think of it, I have never seen a jay go into a house lol. I think I had that paint chip thread on my brain. Thanks for the link. I will go look and see if I can find out.
I recall Wrens having twigs, but there may be others.
That's right my House Wren's had a lot of twigs in their nest.
I went to the sialis site and looked at the nest photos. It looked exactly like a wren nest. So I decided to go out and pull it out of the bird house. I looked to see if the bbs were around and no sign of them so I started to open the side and a bluebird flew out! So I am leaving the nest and house alone. I'm thinking if the bbs really like the house they will build on top of the wren nest. I watched from the kitchen window and the bbs came back and continued sitting by, on and in the house. I am so glad I didn't scare them off lol!
I would take the twigs out. If they build on top of the nest, they will be too close to the opening. At least that's what Dave and others recommend. The probably like the house regardless of what is in there now.
Thanks again Mrs Ed. I took the twigs out this morning at daybreak before the bbs showed up.
