Anyone using Koi Clay ???

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

After cleaning my pond out, I got 4 five gallon buckets of slime. And it's still too cold to use algaefix, I've decided to try koi clay, I dosed the 2500 gal pond with 8 tablespoons of it. Do you think I used enough ? I would really like to get rid of this algae.

Anyone have success with it ?

I love my koi clay. It really helped with the fuzzy and string algae in my pond and with water quality in general. The fish love to play in it and eat it before it settles and I did see it help bring out their colors. It is good for them, some people add it to their food.

I use Gene's koi clay, cheap but I think it is the best. I believe I got it off ebay.

I use koi clay. I'ts part of my algae regimen, but I mostly rely on it to provide the minerals that koi thrive on. I use S.A.B. (String Algae Buster) and a UV light for algae control. Koi clay will act as a flocculant and settle fine particles that cloud the water but I don't think that it's a primary algae defense. At least it doesn't work that way in my pond.

I started using it late last summer. My fish were so sick all summer and a pond shop was going out of business and I bought a bunch of the koi clay at 70% off to give it a try. I don't think I will see anything until this summer about results but I do know my fish likes to swim through it. I put a generous amount of it in the pond-you really can't overdo it.

Thanks for the info everyone. I do have a uv light and filter that I hook up later when it warms up. How much koi clay do you use Snapple ?

Also saw that the baby fish from last summer were alive. All 23 !! That will be my next job, catching them.

How is the weather up in Wisconsin the last few days? Yesterday here in Northern Illinois it is great! Yesterday I worked outside all day without a coat and today some of the same.

Those irises you gave me last year are all coming up in the pond-just beyond the surface of the water. I am excited to see what they look like.

For a 2500 gal pond I use 6 tbs twice a week. I usually add some after a water change too.

Thanks Snapple.

Snapps: I think I need reading glasses (nah, I KNOW I need reading glasses because when I read your dosage I thought you wrote 6lbs twice a week). I don't know why I read it that way, oh well . . .

Crazy: No not the varigated the regular. What color are they going to be-do you remember? Maybe I should just wait and be surprised . . .

MM the iris will be dark purple. It's pre DG so I don't know which one it is. All the water iris I looked at in plant files say that they are sterile and won't set seed, but I got seed off of it last fall. It grows in 3 - 4 inches of water.

tbs....not...lbs....mm LOL

I add a half a cup or so, to my koi food. Shake it around to coat the food, let it sit a few days to stick, and feed it to the koi as normal. It helps with water clarity, digestion, and health. Really, you simply can't overdose with it in any way.

I had nor use koi clay because I had never heard of it. i have to read more about it. My pond is claer right now, algae in control wiyh peroxide, baking soda and salt. i have algae on the waterfall rocks but the pretty ones not string. I used kitty litter few years ago but most of it ended up at the buttom of the pond so now I just use pebbles and dirt ling the mesh planter with landscaping cloth or material. Bellie

I am having a problem with suspended stuff in my pond this year . I had heard of putting clay in the pond but never tried it. Now someone mentions kitty litter. Will that work the same a koi clay?

No they are not the same. Some people use kitty litter to plant their lilies in.

The above link explains koi clay. I have started using the koi clay and the water in my ponds does look better, and the fish really like it.

Thanks crazy4brugs, I will look into it. I wonder if there is a place in Atlanta where I can buy it.

Yes ,I started use koi clay after I landed on bonniesplants.com,I had a terrible problem with string algae in my pond and I am still dosing every other day for prevention and I have not been able to reach the maintenance dose of a weekly application. It has been a wonderful medicine against the string algae and my filter has to be cleaned out everyday to get rid of the dead algae that have collected on the filterpad. So check out this website ,bonnie mails very quickly and the site has all kinds f wonderful info
