Some of my hibbie bushes from Southeast Texas

Nederland, TX(Zone 9a)

Today was mild finally. It's been in the low to mid 30's at night and throwing of the cycle of spring here. 30's are much better than a snow storm I guess!!!
First up is
"Swamp Music"
One of the blooms measured 11"

Beautiful!

Nederland, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks kim. I am ready to see everything blooming again. It's been a rough winter!

Thanks for sharing your blooms Robert! We just had 10 inches of the white stuff..bummer. I will be going to the flower show Sunday..can't wait to see some live blooms!!!

Nederland, TX(Zone 9a)

Yuck on the snow!!! I bet you've had enough to last a lifetime. When I was in the corporate world I lived in a township outside of Pittsburgh. Had enough of it there. Moved back here in 92 and never saw snow until this year. 5" of the white stuff. Kids loved it Hibbies hated it. Enjoy the show sunday!!! Maybe you can get you some beauties!!!

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Poor Hibbies! I hope to find something really nice. Thanks!

Do you have all of your hibiscus in pots?

Nederland, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi Fla_Chick,

Right now all of them are in pots. I am about to plant 30 of them. My mother had a new house built and I was planning on getting rid of a bunch but she asked me to plant something pretty for her. I showed her what I had in mind and she wanted them all (LOL) I guess it shows addiction is inherited as well!!! I am only going to plant mature bushes at least 2 years and older nothing grafted.
It ought to be fun. I can picture it now. She will be asking me to dig them up before long because she likes her privacy. Not much of a shrub to maintain any kind of privacy. (LOL) Blooms are too pretty!!!
All of the plants going in the ground survived the winter extremely well. Some are coming from dormancy but they are full, well branched and will be pretty in no time. Hopefully the frosts and cold weather is about over.

How are yours looking now?

Robert

Also, here is a new dupont seedling under evaluation. Has 8 to 9" bloom once she opens and the bush is a beauty.

Mine are looking D-E-A-D, Im afraid. I have some cuttings in pots, and I have some of those $10 beauties coming from DuPont Nursery. I need to get my taxes done, because I have some money coming back. Now I know, Im being very good, and putting some of my refund towards my credit cards, and some in my IRA.....but I just have to sneak a few of those dollars towards hibbie replacement. Its the right thing to do, dont you think?

That seedling is yummy.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Don't give up on them yet--before I had my GH and mine used to get damaged from the cold they took quite a while to show signs of life again in the spring--one year it wasn't until June that they finally decided to show me they weren't dead. So I definitely wouldn't give up on them when it's only the beginning of March.

Citra, FL

Ok, Ill cut them back and just wait a bit more for them. The ones that I have cut back have had no green at all in the stems. Im thinking thats bad.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I have a favorite one, itsy Bitsy, that has no green; it is so depressing. It was a shrub, about 5' x 5'. Fortunately I do have a rooted cutting but it will be a while before it is a big plant.

Robert, how much sun does that gorgeous hanging basket of Chartruse Rose get?

Nederland, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi Alice,
Right now its about 50/50. I'll put it in full morning but filtered afternoon as soon we get some stability in the weather here.

Robert

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Stability in the weather this year?????? LOL

I think we are finally out of the woods but it has been a rough ride.

Nederland, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL I think senility has set in. Wishfull thinking or something like that... LOL There is no stability but I am hopeful.
Heres another pic of swamp music. I have 2 really good size pots that I am putting into 15 gallon containers. They will go on each side of the steps at the front of the house. May look good. We will see...

I love all of them! Great pics & unbelievable color combos. I've ordered some & can't wait to give them a shot. I got one last year, dug it up and it's waiting in the garage for better weather. Just a few teeny, tiny leaves so I still have my fingers crossed. The soil is really sad they're in now, so I'm gonna try to repot tomorrow. I would love some advice on what they like & don't like, actually any tips you may have.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Love your pictures, how did you get the yellow one to drape, in the hanging basket?

LK

Nederland, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi LK

I planted 2 plants angled kinda sideways. Lots of cutting and pinching to get a full basket. I have had offers of $100.00 for it that I was stupid enough to turn down. A true sign of an addict!!!

Robert
