If you are "still" in a canoe or kayak, it is amazing how close you can get to the birds.

We have drifted on a river into a flock of over 100 ducks - could have petted them.
Guess they thought we were a log floating by.

Risky thing to do! In all the stories, "floating logs" turn out to be Alligators . . . ;-)

We were the "log".

I know better than to get near a floating log in a Gulf Coast river. -
If it's not a 'gator, and really us a downed tree or log, it probably will be covered in fire ants.

Touching that is more than risky.

I do have a zoom lever on my camera and also cropped these gator shots
we did not get this close
did have one follow the canoe when we has a fish over the side on a chain thing
willing to give it up if the need arose

Where are you in the canoe?

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

I would be really scared in a canoe with those alligators. I remember going canoeing in Canada and the boat had a hole in it and sank. See, stuff happens. Also, I watched one swimming toward me this past weekend. I was on a pier that was totally safe, but my heart was racing anyway. You're braver than I would be.

Wait until they learn to climb ;-)
