My first go at growing from seed.

Merino, Australia

I have a fruit on one of my epis. It has been there since Oct 2007 when I pollinated my 'Tangerine' with pollen from my 'Andromeda'.
The fruit has slowly turned a pinkish green now and feels quite soft.
I have never grown an epi from seed and want to try with this color combination.
The fruit is about 50cm long now and I would hate it to fall off and be ruined. . It is just starting to get into Autumn here now so if I do get the seeds, would I keep them until it is warmer around next October/ November here, or could I sow them and keep inside.
Any help appreciated, thank you. Jean.

You could sow and keep inside. In fact that is probable best. I do not know how long the seeds are good as I have only planted the ones I bought. Just make sure the fruit is ripe.

Just be patience because it will take 7 years more or less before they bloom. I was told that you maybe able to cut that in half by feeding them each watering.
Here is a picture of a couple of my seedlings.

Good luck

The ESA has info on how to do the pod and how to get all the seeds from pod. Their web address is epiphyllumsociety.org. It may take awhile to get your first bloom but its a lot of fun watching them grow. Thats a very interesting cross.

I would definitely start them inside. That sounds like a great cross. I didn't realize it would take so long from seed to bloom.
congrats on the pod.

I started the seeds I bought before I learned about the time it took to bloom. But I did learn that it could take longer. I was told about one of the early breeders who always waited until a seedling bloomed before culling any. He make a cross that all but one seedling bloomed red-that one seedling took 20 years to bloom and it was the first yellow epi. So it is good some time to wait. Just do not know if I have the patience or the time left to wait that long. LOL

One thing Epi's are really good at is teaching patients.

Yes but look at the reward for a little bit of work and patience!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you all for the hints and comments. When I did the cross , it was my first year of blooms and I was so taken with the size and color, I couldn't resist trying the two so different colors together. I just hope it won't take 20 years for a bloom. Jean.

Just remember to feed at each watering and it should cut the time in half. Hopefully.
Good luck!!!!!
