Strange rotting problem

Lubbock, TX

I have a cutting that came with two other cuttings of Andromeda from last year. On the left side it roots and has a healthy leaf coming up. On the right side below the soil line it rots from the outside into the mid rib. It has done this twice.

Each time I cut the rooted section off and let it callous over and re potted it. I would also cut the rotted end off let the good part callous for a week put it in perlite. When it showed positive growth I put it in a clean pot with fresh soil. It did it again.

Its only this one cutting the rest are doing fine. It has been treated with a rooting medium that has a fungicide in it every time. It has had the same care as the other cuttings. This really has me scratching my head and going humm, dang it.

Is is drying up?. If they are sending out new growth then I now usually let them alone. When I repot next time then I will bury the bad part under the soil. I even had one that sent out new growth from under the ground and then it died, the new growth is doing great.

If it is a moist rot then that is another matter. I plant in soil from the beginning and I am finding less moist rot.

I only put cuttings in perlite till they grow roots then I put them in soil. I tried various soils etc. for rooting out cuttings and nothing worked as well as perlite. It's just this one cutting I bought last winter thats doing this all the other cuttings are fine.

If it produce new growth, then I would just let it do its on thing. I have had a number on them that has done that. I will try to get a couple of pictures. We are back down into the freezing temp. tonight and tomorrow night. I just hope the winds did not destroy all the plastic.

Is this what you are talking about. This is one of the Eden cuttings that I get free. The cutting is rooted and growing. As I had 3 of them I just let it go. When I repot it I will plant it deeper.

You are welcome. I had one cutting that sent out a new growth from under the soil and then the original cutting did that. I had seen that on cuttings of Epi Oxy so I know not to worry to much about it. I tugged on this cutting and it did not come up, so it has a good root system.

Here is the whole plant.
