Today I was wandering around a local nursery and stopped to chat with a worker there I had seen before. She said, let's go check on "HB". I didn't know who that was, but followed her to see. I had forgotten that, a couple of weeks before, I had seen an Anna's hummingbird feeding at the mahonia which was in bloom in the greenhouse.
Lo and behold, the pair made a little nest in one of the small trees in the greenhouse and they are sitting on a couple of eggs.
I would have given my eye teeth for a camera with a zoom. As it is, though, I'm luck I had my little Kodak with me.
Can you find the bird sitting on the nest?
Local Hummingbird Makes Good
How sweet!
I don't know what I thought they did to hatch eggs, but I didn't really ever thought they were still . . .
I see it. Very cute!
It would just be the Mom and babes.
Hummingbird Dads just do the deed and then leave. :-)
It would be nice if they stuck around to help but that's not the case with Hummers.
Thanks for posting this Katie! I'm glad to see their trying to give them privacy.

oh, i love that sign!
How wonderful!
I loved the sign too... "This plant is temporarily occupied." LOL
I looked twice but still wasn't able to see it. duh...
Right at the center on the thickest branch. You'll see the nest has white spots on it.
The nest is just above dead center of the photo... look in the direction of 10 or 11 o'clock from the pink thing... you can see the extended wing and head with upward pointing beak of the female sitting on the nest.
That is so special.
Pelletory - that's good to know. The gal who works there (who's been keeping a feeder up for them) swore she saw the color in [his] neck. I didn't see it, but I don't know much about their coloring or behavior.
Wish I'd had a zoom. But I'm just grateful I happened to have a camera. I think I'll try to stop by the nursery again next week and see what's going on. I love their nest - it seems very sturdy. About the size and shape of a teacup.
Very cool. Nice job. Thank you!!
sweet!
Thank you katie and thank you Mrs_Ed. I was looking there but couldn't make it out. What a cutie.
