This is my Fritzi and yes he's a registered purebred doxi.
How about another?
Darling dog.

That was a darling video.
Cute. Is he/she a merle? I didn't know that dachshunds came in merle . . .
Yes, he's a blue merle, he hasn one light blue eye. When he was a puppy I told someone he was an Australian Shepherd and they believed it! But I'd never have another one. He has had itches since he was about a year old. I think the breeding made too many problems: he comes from red, black, and brown doxies. S-i-L had a sister to him and she was mostly white and stone deaf.
The deafness comes from the coloring - I was just having this conversation the other night. So often, though, when breeders of any breed breed for color, they lose track of everything else.
Skin allergies are common in so many breeds. Do you know what he's allergic to? Have you eliminated wheat from his diet - that can cause a lot of problems.
Blue merle is so pretty. I've just been reading about it in dachshunds, thanks to you.
Several years ago after buying VERY expensive vet food, I decided to make it: 1 qt cooked rice, 1 C vegies (no onion), 1 C ground beef or lamb (we buy whole animals @ the fair), or chicken or tuna, 1 C gravy. I also have a red mini doxi-I call her fat bottom! He still has itches; vet says it must be environmental, or a hernia. He's 13 so I won't put him through surgery. I think it's "stuff" from the yard. Hubby tries to keep it cleaned up. But I'm not really for high breeding. We had a Dobie with thyroid trouble.
Oh, so you're on top of the allergy thing. I just didn't know. My neighbors' dog is allergic to grass - bummer. You're right, though, most breeds anymore have issues from careless breeding. It's too sad.
It's starting to look like, too, we are hurting our environment more and more. There is a much higher incidence of lymphoma in dogs and cats and they think its from our weed and feed products. I imagine that's impacting us (and our thyroids), too!!
My whippet takes a thyroid supplement. But then, he's old and we all break down a little when we get old (not that I would know. LOL).
Some years ago I had a Bouvier des Flandres with terrible skin problems. We tried everything, and nothing seemed to work. I finally changed vets. The first thing the new vet did was check for thyroid deficiency. I can never remember if it hypo or hyper-thyroidism....but anyway, we put Nadia on a thyroid supplement, and the skin problem cleared right up.
You might consult your vet about thyroid, and see what he or she thinks.
James, that dog is great looking. Looks like a thinker.
Alas, Nadia developed bone cancer a few years back. She's now chasing squirrels in some distant place. But you're right Willow, she was a very thoughtful and serious old thing. She was shy around strangers to a fault, but very affectionate with her people. I think I miss her almost more than any other dog I've ever had.
We'll send her a hug.
James, I'm so sorry for your loss. :-( She's a looker.
