Rooster Usefullness

Clarksburg, MO

How long is a rooster good for mating. I am wanting a roo for my new hampshire red hens and am having a hard time finding one. Came across one on craigslist and he is 2 years old (if the people are being honest). Would you buy him for mating? I really only need him for this season and will use a new roo next year from the chicks he throws.

Good question. I would also like to know.

Roo's never get old as long as they can mate and you been getting fertile eggs. I learned this a long time ago when i first got chickens your hens will lay out but your roo will always be good.
I have a roo hes 4 years old and hes just as good today as he was when he was young i have some of his younguns in my bater right now LOL

Awesome find. I would. Two years is not old for a roo.

It is probably not critical in a backyard flock--but the broiler industry has funded a lot of studies that show:

Whoa! Too much information.....

Wonder which student got to do that study? Wonder if they would like to borrow my Nemo?

You gotta take your grant money where you find it.....

Well that just answered a whole bunch of questions I never thought to ask...

Definitely PG info and Yes T.M.I

I thought that was interesting.. although I had to read it more than once..LOL
In Damerow's book it mentioned the fertility drops off the second year. I imagine that, with everything, there are exceptions...
I don't think performance drops off.. as much as quality... but hey, if it works, don't fix it! LOL

Edited for spelling
