Ordering New Baby Chickens

Deering, NH(Zone 5a)

Hi All,
Well it looks like we will be ordering new baby chickens real soon. I'm going to agway today to pick up the form. This way hubby and I can choose what we want. I'm thinking a couple will be roosters, but I'm not sure on that. We will be weaning out the other chickens. I have so far only 2 chickens that are giving me eggs. the others are just eating them up. I would have had 5 eggs yesterday. So it's time now.

Sorry you have egg eaters it seems once one starts the rest get the idea too.
I've got one now that ate her first egg she laid and has continued to eat every one she lays i don't know what i'm going to do with her right now.

Good luck with your Chicks and post some pics for us to see

They have them little blinders that are used to keep them from peeking each other. Maybe they would work for egg eating too.
I think the hatchery's would know where to get them.
We don't have that problem now. We did have when we had older hens, like 2 year old's.
I am going to keep my flock young. My 125 pullets have started to lay. It's fun watching them trying to figure out which nest they should use. Seems like after a few days they have it figured out. I think they use the same nest box each time.

Hi Harmony, yes I will post the pictures when I get them. The egg eaters will be butchered. I'm not about to deal with it anymore. It's a sad thing when you have to do that.

(Zone 7b)

Sorry you had to deal with this problem but one thing i do know it's rare i have had only a few hens do this in the past 8 years.
You will enjoy your new chicks ^_^

Bernie, thats a lot of eggs!!!! You must have a lot of nesting boxes.

Rhodie, Where are you ordering from? I cant wait to see the new babies!!! You have hens eating the eggs? Boy, thats not good. Remove the bad guys before the others copy the bad behavior. :0

We are ordering through our agway in town. We might be getting ducks too besides chicks and roosters. I'm figuring the roosters are also known as broilers. Some of the chickens are really neat looking like the Black Sexlinks.

Okay, I took some pictures.
These are the "old" hens. Most born less than a year ago. Getting 35 to 40 eggs a day from this flock.

This is their nest box. It has roll out nests, so eggs are under the little doors. This I bought, it cost $285.00.

These are my babies. They are Gold Star layers, born October 1, 2008. Just starting to lay. Got 35 eggs yesterday & lost count today. 125 pullets in this flock. Never lost a one & they grew up in a cold Minnesota winter.

This is their nesting area. The metal one came along with some hens we took that the owner had no place for. The wood nest I built kind of like the one I bought. So far they are using only the bottom row.

CountryGardens,
Keep coming with the pictures hon. My hubby is loving it. It's giving him the ideas he needs for when we rebuild our chicken coup.

This is an old double corn crib. The first picture is in what used to be the driveway. Just walled it off. They have a roost in the crib part.
The other flock is in one side of the crib. Part was grain bins. That's where the roost & nest boxes are. They are fed in the crib area.

Great coop Country!! I cant wait to see the new chicks Rhodie!!!!

Cool CG! Love your nests. It must make it easy for egg collecting. I'm constantly brushing off shavings or other things. :-)
I have some that were born on Oct 2! Not seeing anything as of yet though(Black Australorps and EE's) I can't wait. I told my Dh about how well the Red Star lays and he groaned. lol!

Besides R.I.R's we are thinking about Black Sexlinks and Barred Rocks. Plus we might get some ducks for our neighbor. He has a swamp so to speak. He plans on somewhat fencing it in to keep the cats out.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Nice choices Rhodie. Barred Rock are laying machines too. ;)
Ducks can make an omelet in one egg!!! hehehe

Deering, NH(Zone 5a)

What, ducks lay eggs too? I never heard of that. Your making it up.

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Somewhere on here, I heard duck eggs taste better than chicken eggs. Any thoughts ?

One of my egg customers ordered some meat chickens yesterday. I didn't know I was going into the meat business, but I guess I am!

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

I love the duck eggs-great for baking! My pekin is a good layer but if you what the best egg-layers for ducks are the Khaki Campbells.

Deering, NH(Zone 5a)

No kidding. When I mentioned this to hubby, he was like "of course ducks lay eggs." We will be getting a variety of birds this time around. So far yesterday and today I have gotten 3 eggs each day. That's pretty good.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Yup, Ducks lay eggs. Big one too. Think you need to get a few!!! ;)
