Mold? Fungus? Sad dirt in seed starter

San Luis Obispo, CA(Zone 9a)

I have been starting lettuce seeds regularly in my newspaper pots with great success. My last three sprouts are very sad and have some strange green mold or something growing on the soil. What's that about? Should I toss these three? Is it the dirt? Its been pretty wet the last couple weeks, do they need to dry out?

Those sprouts look perfectly viable to me. I can't make out anything on the soil surface, but it could be algae. Moisture + sunlight will start it up.

I believe Lois is right...looks like a bit of green algae on the soil surface, I've had that too when I overwatered, but the plants continued to thrive. Just let the soil dry out a little bit.

Yes, I've had that too when the soil is too wet. I have had good results watering with a baster, very slowly and controlled. Trouble is that they don't make the new basters as good as the old ones. I have thrown out 2 new ones now. You can't hold the water back and water slowly like you used to. If you have an old one, hold on to it and use it to water seedlings. And, keep the bulb out of the sun and heat. Wish I had.

I'll see how the dry out works. I worry about my baby plants like an over-protective mother.

I didn't worry about my kids as much as I do my plants, haha.

cathy4 - isn't that the truth!!! :-)

My kids tell me to stop fretting over the plants!

My daughter complains that every time she calls I've been messing with my plants. "You and your plants!" They are quieter and don't talk back. :-D
