Anyone know what this is?

This was labeled Savoy cabbage when I bought the young plant last November. It is definitely in the cabbage family but which one?

It sort of resembles chinese cabbage bok choy, but I'm not positive. Is the stem end rounded almost like an onion?

I thought of that too but the leaves were short and they are so very bright green. The baes was not rounded. Whatever it is, it tasted great.

It could be a Savoy cabbage that bolted. Did any of them show signs of heading. There are savoys that are in this color range and the leaves do show some savoying. Usually savoys form a loose head. Did the plant have a cultivar name in addition to the type? Collard? but I don't know of any readily available cultivars that are that savoyed. Here is a Yellow Cabbage Collard that is about a week from bolting.

No cultivar name; around here you buy what you can get and it isn't much. LOL

Hmmm, it was bolting. You can see the little flowers in the center, that is why I quickly picked it today. The leaves have the look of Bok Choi but they are small, maybe 6", and that light, bright color.

I'd love to know what it is because it was delicious and I would grow more of it if I could.

Ouch! Should have let it bolt and harvest the seeds. LOL

There is another smaller one in the garden, maybe I will let that one bolt. Good idea!

Does your supplier use Bonnie plants? They own the vegetable plant market around here form the Big Box stores to roadside stands. They vend the savoy cabbage Ace. They also vend a Chinese cabbage under Bok Choy, but it is actually a Mitchhili/ Napa type. They have a different flavor and texture than cabbage.

Bonnies Version of Bok Choy

I hear 'ya on the Bonnie plants; I try and avoid them as often as I can. Actually I forget where I got these plants as I bought some around here, some in Myrtle Beach and some in Jacksonville, FL, but none of them were Bonnies. My car brakes wherever I am passing a nursery or feed store.

My plant did not head like the photo you show but the leaves look similar. I am going to look up that Mitchili type and see what I can find out.

Thanks for the lead Farmerdill, I think I have an idea on what it maight be. There is a pak choi type of brassica called Pei Tsai. It is described as being light green, mild flavored and with a loose head. I think that is pretty close to what I have.

Evergreen seeds had a fuzzy picture of the Pei Tsai.
