What is it?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

It's a natural gas well. You poor thing! Those things are annoying!

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

I guess it would be less annoying if you had the mineral rights.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL Anna! Even if you have mineral rights, all the dust and constant trucks aren't worth it.

and NOISE! GRRRrrrrr!

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

If it was yours you could afford to move far enough away that the noise didn't bother you and you would still get the benefits.....

Gosh, antiquedrose, I think you gave that thing too much Mill's Magic last fall. Can't wait to see it when it blooms ;~).

I had friends who had one in their backyard. I asked if the noise didn't drive them nuts and keep them awake. He said that it was better than counting sheep because every time it make one round of the clakety clack, clakety clack, he said "20 dollars, 20 dollars, 20 dollars". Cracked me up. I guess I could get used to it for that. I could always cover it in vines :0) never have enough room for all those that I want.

There are many of those sprouting up around the Metroplex, I guess we just have to live with it.

One of these popped up just down the road from me. Very loud for a while but now I do not notice it. They come about once a month and load up for about a week then closed down until the next month. It is in the back yard of a family. They bought the house and very soon afterwards the drilling began. It was not their well so they did not get the benefits but only the noise.

From what I understand the initial drilling is noisy but after they bring it on line the noise level decreases considerably. We got the signing bonus then the economy crashed and they stopped the push to get it going. Now they are just beginning to petition for permits in our area again.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, we got the bonus too, thankfully there are no empty spaces close to our house. I believe it has to be at least 400 feet from a residence. But I am not sure of the distance.

It's the Beverly Hillibillies all over again around here!

I love the sitcom's tune and may download it and crank it up next trip into town.

violent film, but accurately depicts who you are dealing with. These oil and gas companies tend to have very little respect for our mother earth. I understand that most of us are pawns in the game of life, and there are hard working honest people working at the site. However, be prepared for trash everywhere, yahooish type activity, and pollution of every kind.

For years and years, the oil companies would just let the natural gas "blow off" until they figured out how useful it is. (my father is a petroleum/chemical engineer, just like his father was.)

--I grew up all around the world, living next door to refineries and other mining structures. The water tasted funny and the air smelled like gas.

We got a lease offer but did not sign it because they would not tell us where the well would be. Probably would not stop them anyway, but made me feel a bit better. :)

The one drilling our gas went up a few weeks ago, only a mild hum at night. My husband calls it our "Texas Christmas tree". It will be gone when they're done drilling, so I can deal with it for a bit longer.

be very careful. there can be problems that come along with having one of them near by.. I had a friends hunting camp broken into by some of the workers of a rig near them and when they caught the rig guys with the stolen goods the supervisor fired them. my friend didnt press charges cause he figured losing their jobs was punishment enough. Then a day or so after they were fired my friends place burned to the ground due to arson . Several cabins all the contents, atvs and motorhomes were destroyed. Over 2 hundred thousand dollars worth of damages and the men fired were no where to be found. They lit out in a hurry it seems. So be very careful!!! Im not saying all of them are bad but when you hear stuff like that it makes you step back and take a long hard look at everyone working on one ..

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7b)

That is horrible. I guess you just have to be as careful as you can, but not much you can really do about crazy people like that. We have alot of break ins where I'm at and a few people assaulted in their own homes when they happened to be at home during the burglaries. Even old ladies and men - just horrendous. Not a bad area, just in the country and these creeps think we're so far apart that we can't see what's going on and it takes so long for the police to get here. I stay at home and I'm always running out there when I see an unfamiliar car going by just to let them know that 'I'm watching'. Couple of weeks ago the electric guy was driving real slow down the road and stopped a ways past my house and I couldn't see the marking on the truck. I broke out my binoculars and stood out there where he could see me and stared him down. He finally saw me and stared back and then came toward my house. I went and got my dogs out there and waited for him. He yelled that he was the electic guy checking the lines and just wanted to let me know he was out there. Probably thought I was some lunatic, crazy lady with the binoculars. But it is really terrifying each time I hear that one of my neighbors was attacked or buglarized. Guess you just have to get crazy back.

Wells, TX(Zone 8b)

Im lucky.. I have 2 bigs dogs that while are harmless (except for their digging in my flower beds) sound and look like theyd rip you ro shreads if you stepped foot on my property.. Once they know you are a friend and allowed in the house they are as sweet as they come. Once youre in the house all you have to worry about is being licked to death...lol....they make me feel a lot safer...

East of Nacogdoches, TX(Zone 8a)

Now this. 1/4 mile away on ajoining property (not near any roads and hard to access) is a new pond under construction, looks like a holding tank for waste, not livestock water. DS discovered this while hiking this past weekend.

There's a large hill behind this pond, my side of this pond it's flat, to my back door. So if a rig goes up, the noise will be funneled this direction. Oh joy.

But maybe I'm worrying for naught. I haven't noticed any tanks near other rigs.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

That is sad but true as to strangers coming into a neighborhood with a well or just roofing a house; will see the coming and going of people and try to take advantage. Most break-ins happen during the daytime when people are usually gone.

Good for you aardvark! That is our first line of defense against the neighborhood break-ins. Neighbors that are home can usually spot things out of the ordinary, like dogs barking that are usually quite etc.
I am in the Citizens on Patrol Code Blue group we are trained to spot and report suspicious people in our neighborhood. I am sure there is a group in your part of town, contact your local Neighborhood Police Officer and ask for the next training, or dmail me your location and I will get you the info. Patrollers like DH and I that are retired can be out there at various times each week and we can go by vehicle, walk, or bicycle and still be effective. They never have enough patrollers.
