A Complete Crash?

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Tonight I was helping a friend who was having trouble connecting to the internet. We did some uninstalls, because his system was running very slow, and then we got a message to this effect: Windows has encountered a problem and is shutting down. Something about saving your work so that it wouldn't be lost. It gave a minute and then would restart.

Is this a crash? Is there anything that can be done to bring the system backup, and stay up. It does this repeatedly. I thought about doing a back up, and using the restore disks, but it will no stay up long enough to do that.

Can anything be done, or is it time for him to take it into the shop?
