My vertical box salad garden

San Tan Valley, AZ(Zone 9b)

I posted a pic of my vertical box garden on another thread and now there have been quite a few requests for a little more information.

It's so simple that I think a couple of pictures would probably answer most questions. Basically it is 2 4x4 posts set into 18" deep holes 6' apart. 3 boxes 6' long were made from 2x8's. There are 3 1 1/2" diameter holes covered with hardware cloth in each box for drainage. Short lengths of 4x4 were notched and screwed to the up-right posts. The boxes sit on those and can be slid in and out so they can be staggered to catch the sunlight. It's a real space saver for me!

I didn't realize the boxes could move, that is even neater. I really think I can make this. Thanks for more info.

Dann_L what a great set up! I had thought to do something similar with gutters but I opted for something else. I saw your post on another thread, glad to see how it workd out. D in TN

Thanks everyone!

Credit for this should go to DCarrington, a fellow DG'er who posts regularly on the Market Growers Forum. My inspiration came from a thread where he posted a few pic's of his stair step garden about a year ago. I was playing with ways to garden in tight areas and when I saw what he did, my little project suddenly became very clear.

So Dann_L what will you grow this year?

San Tan Valley, AZ(Zone 9b)

Probably the same in this set up. I'm thinking about building another one for herbs.

How does your garden grow now, nearly a month later? D

I'll try to take a pic and post it this weekend for you.

Hmmm....looking at the pic from a month ago and now there isn't really much change. I have removed the arugula from the top box and haven't made any changes to the other two. I've been spending all my time on the rest of the garden this month. Just about finished getting all of that planted.

I would say some good change. Yummy greens there. Keep busy.
