Speaking of jasmines - found this one listed (but not available) on Tops site http://toptropicals.com/cgi-bin/garden_catalog/cat.cgi?uid=Jasminum_dichotomum: Jasminum dichotomum aka Gold Coast Jasmine, Everblooming jasmine - sounds absolutely yummy!! Anyone "hear" of a place that carries it??? Hmmm?????
Where for art thou Jasminum dichotomum
Sounds like it's super invasive in FL, perhaps you can get it for free, lol.
Look what I found... Tricolor Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasmine 'Tricolor') HARDY zones 7-11? http://www.marketworks.com/storefrontprofiles/DeluxeSFItemDetail.aspx?sid=1&sfid=124287&c=0&i=109852306
Believe or not I bought that years ago at a Walmart in FL...LOL Never did anything much!! There's about 5 different jasmines referred to as 'Gold Coast' not sure if THIS one is one of the invasive ones though...Tops refers to it as rare.
The pictures and information on the various sites don't always appear to be the same plant. Also, just because something is classified as non-native or invasive doesn't always mean that it is common. I would try posting on the Florida Gardening forum to see if someone there has more knowledge about this plant.
Ahhh the good ole FL group...I feel badly for them...I'm forever popping in on them...I think they must cringe when they see a post from me...LOL
I just wanted to personally get my Chantell fix on a different forum. ;-)
You're a trip!!! 2 days till Happy happy!!! Hugs!
Alrighty posted down on your home-town forum!!! I'll tell ya...I love my FL, TX, and CA bunch of DGer's!!! You are THE best enablers around!
Yes, 2 days! Yay. Speaking of enabling..........just got off that TradeWinds site- what have you done to me. I just went seed crazy!
LOL....hey, gotta help out where I can ROTFLOL Have you checked out Almost Eden's site yet? Just got my first ever plant from Tops yesterday - whew, they can wrap...didn't think I'd ever get to that pot!!! THIS year I'm all about quality scented babies - I DO trust Tops when they say somethings very fragrant...hmmmm, except that Dwarf Jasmine tree....a little disappointed but if she leafs out a again - well, she is a looker at least!
Hey Chantell!
I just spent the last 3 hrs going over botanical descriptions and photo comparisons. (trying to figure it out!) I've had a suspicion in the back of my mind on what exactly the large jasmine is growing in the middle of my fence. It's starting to stretch 20 ft on either side of where it's planted and that's invading other jasmines territory.
I wasn't sure if what I had was J. azoricum or J. tortuosum. Photos of the plants with leaves look mostly identical from various online sources.
Now it seems that most plants sold as J. azoricum is really J. fluminense! My jasmine measures the same as the bot. descriptions as far as flower tube, calyx teeth, etc. The one difficulty is knowing what exactly is meant by pubescent or puberulent; how exactly scattered can the hairs be and if you need a microscope instead of hand-lens to see them. (I need a practical bot. course!) The only way to know is to see a 'proven' J. azoricum. BTW, my jasmine doesn't fruit.
Some of the best photos were via a Florida invasive plant website
http://www.fleppc.org/list/list.htm I clicked on the '07 list and looked at the two jasmines.
That 2nd one looked somewhat familiar.
About 3 yrs ago I visited both Fairchild gardens and the Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead. In the back of the spice park was a Jasmine vine growing up into a tree. Voila and that matches what you're looking for.
I prefer the Spice park. I donated a Maerula tree I started from seed back in '79 from J.L.Hudson in the early to mid-80's. It's now their pride and joy.
If I ever have the time and $ I need to bring them 3 more trees. 1) Rudraksha-Eleocarpus ganitrous; 2) two ea of Bassia latifolia-Butter trees.
I'm sure state officials prefer that you grow that jasmine up north.
So, if I can get down there I know what to look for in seeds.
oops, wrote a book.
Always thrilled to read your "books" - helps me learn...will never catch up to you but at least know more each year then the year before. I think I need to google Fruit and Spice Park...just sounds like a place i'd love to visit. They must be very appreciative of your generosity!! Don't suppose you recall the scent? Some of the jasmines have much lighter scents then say Maid of Orleans and Grand Duke....ahhhh, love them both. Ok...going to find that park and google the trees you mentioned.
Guess what I found? My photo from the Fruit and Spike park trip. Look at those shiny, plump berries....
listen closely
"pickme! pickme!"
I hate not being able to tolerate a guilty conscience....I never took any.
The closest I could get to id'ing these was J. diphyllum.
Thanks Chantell! You helped me to get an id on this photo I took a while back.
Ahhh Kevin nothing wrong with a clear conscience...good for you. Not sure what help I was (LOL) YOU did all the work.
