there have been a few questions, comments etc regarding rooting clematis cuttings recently here on the forum. i put my two cents worth on one of them, regarding using old wood showing new growth for successful cuttings.
this weekend i was checking out the british clematis society information. regarding cuttings they got a little more specific, advising that the middle of a live can be used in the spring. in other words, the tip of the cane and associated new growth may be too soft to root successfully, and the woodiest (oldest) part of a cane at the bottom may be too woody. they advised to take the cutting from the middle part of a live vine, in the spring.
the BCS website had a lot of good information in addition to this.
if any of you clem fans are not members of the American CLematis Society, please check it out. they have great newsletters, not sent electronically and edith malek, the founder and "queen of clematis" is responsive to q and a. it is a good cause to perpetuate interest in clems and i have enjoyed being a member.

Good tips -- thanks! I've got a couple I've been meaning to try to propagate so I can share them... :-)
