I got this as a stick from Hawaii. It's been growing nicely but is starting to lift out of the pot. Took it out of the pot to transplant and it seems to have quite a substantial tap root happening.
Do they do this? Do they like to have a deeper pot maybe? Any help appreciated!!
Hawaiian Ti help
I would probably put it in a deeper pot. I keep potting mine up to a larger size as needed. I find these to be pretty forgiving. I had several in the ground and dug up a couple when it got down in the 20's F so they would stay pretty. I wasn't very careful or nice to them since I was in a hurry that day. They didn't seem to mind a bit.
The ones in the ground are still alive and are just very ratty looking.
Yes they do have a bit of a tap root. Actually if you don't get it all, another will grow in it's place. I uprooted one 3 times thinking that I got all of the root, but didn't and 3 times a new ti grew.
I'll point you in the right direction, Alohahoya will know what to tell you.here is one of her threads on Ti's, if she doesn't find us here first!

Quite a tap root indeed! Can be shocking the first time you see it in a pot because you're not expecting it lol
It was shocking! I thought maybe it had been growing upside down...or something.
Glad to hear that it's normal. So, for the sake of re-potting the root could probably be trimmed without hurting the plant?
The large starchy root can be cooked and eaten, or fermented and made into a type of Tropical beer ('awa'awa).
