im still good,i do have bunches of babies and i will be looking to expand my collection,
dont feel bad, i still have more then most people i know, and since i lost violets too,
that means more room for streps, thanks lynn
im just happy to be back,(but would be happier if it warmed up

JIM

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Glad to see you are back at home but I would be happier, too, if it warmed up for you.
There are only two orders I want to place this spring on streps. I have some Bristol's plants but not nearly as many as I would like to have. So..............Rob's is the first place.

Then I never have gotten about 6 of LLG Thompsons. Every time I order they are out of the same plants.

I have been trimming and planting leaves all weekend but it doesn't take long for more leaves to appear...............holler at me, Jim, in about a month. By then, I can tell what I have. Most of my babies are new ones to me from your leaves, Goldleaf's leaves and marion's leaves.

This weekend, I have been cutting leaves to start duplicates of many streps I have that are a nice size by now............

By now, I looked at Gary's site and I placed a big order last summer and have most of his (not all).......

I did find 11 new streps in Boerne at that African Violet Hill Country nursery early in the week........nothing too exciting but they are different than what I have"
Double Scoop
Sweet Miss McIntyre
Heartbreaker
Blue Mars (used to have her and love her by Dale Martens)
Pink Surprise
Demeter (felt lucky on this one as she is a compact Oglevee)
Niagra's Michelle (felt really lucky on this one........I had her and don't know where she is)
Franken Dainty Lady (I have one but have cut so many leaves off, I needed another to propagate)
Crimson Blaze (had her and love her red netting) by Robinson it says......but not part of the Bristol series........so I don't understand)
Michael (love that purple)
Kim ( a replacement of one of my favorite Dibley's)

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

I am in the process of building a collection. So far I have ordered 14 plants,Susan,Gran and Jannich have some extras I like and I will be buying from others at the marketplace. It will probably be summer by the time they are big enough to share, but maybe I will have something you like.I wish it were warmer here, too.
Lynn

Williston, ND

cool,.looks like you hit the Jackpot, all good streps, save me a start of sweet miss
and heartbreaker and pink surprize, you will love niagra michelle, nice fantasy

JIM

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have never lived in a zone as cold as 5a. I did live in zone 6 for 11 years and I had gro lights all over the house just to stay sane.

Last night we had a cold front and it got down to 40 degrees and I had to keep 2 heaters going all night on the porch......today is sunny and beautiful although cool for us this time of the year.

Lynn, I have spent over 2 years collecting what streps I do have, but it is so much fun to grow from leaf. It is a feeling of satisfaction that I get no where else but 'propagating' plants.

Williston, ND

thanks lynn, soon as i get these going better ill have some leaves i can share, its still cold here, but in a month it should be warm enough to share

JIM
ps i wrote you a dmail gail,

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I still have your want list in my documents, Jim and will go add these to the list I have............

I had Niagra Michelle once................I don't remember her being a fantasy though...............
To my documents.........I go..........

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

well.......I was headed to documents but will go to dmail first........

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Jim..........I have no dmail.......but have to go bake brownies right now..........(for me......have to find ways to be sure I am fat)

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Gail,
I love propagating too and plan to do do quite a bit of it when I get started, although I'm not sure I want to get back into seeds.
Jim,that is so nice of you to think of sharing when you are still in the process of rescuing your plants. It is too cold here for at least another month and a lot of people won't ship here until April,so I am just buying supplies right now and biting at the bit to get started..LOL.
Lynn

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lynn,
Propagate from leaf the ones you do have...........it doesn't matter if it is cold outside...........so much fun!

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

LOL,Gail. I wish I could! The problem is none of them are here yet.I quess I could propagate a few Begonias.I may have to take a trip to the nursery this week. They had a few starter AVs for $4 a couple of weeks ago and they might have more by now.
Lynn

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I would help you but plants hate those heat packs. I fried a box to Goldleaf in December. It is especially difficult to do when people are zones apart..........they fry here before they can get out of town to cooler weather.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Gail,
Bless your heart, but if the poor things arrived fried, both of our hearts would be broken ^_^. I will just have to be patient.
Jim,
A while back you posted a picture of either a Sinn. or a Strep. with an unusual sort of orange or coral bloom.I can't seem to find the thread.Do you recall what it might have been?
Lynn

Williston, ND

i sure dont, its been over a month and i have a hard time remembering what i did yesterday lol

(Zone 1)

I've never been drawn to orange flowers, always a pink gal, but was lurking on Dave's Violets site a few days ago and I just had to add this Sinningia to my wish list: http://www.davesviolets.com/sinnozarkcoral%20freckles.jpg It is so pretty!

Welcome back. Unfortunately, travel is a toss up to how many plants will live or die. Every time I go, I always wonder how my plants will fare. Mostly my family is NOT supposed to water, and if they do, it's just a "sip". I also keep my lights off so the heat from them does not dry them out. Hoping they will last 2 to 3 weeks, luckily , thats as long as I've been gone. Once my daughter told me on the phone that her boyfriend knew all about plants and that he had watered them for me...well, I was only going to be gone 1 1/2 weeks, they should not have needed water until I got back as I watered the morning that I left home AND I told the family this, and do not water. I held my breath that they were not rotting...I was lucky, almost all okay, I poured out the extra water and let them dry out some as soon as I got home. You need to pay your plant sitter more, ha! Hope you had a great time. tish

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Hi JIm, sorry to hear about your plants. When the little babies from leaves you sent to me in the fall get bigger, you know I will gladly send you leaves. They are so cute and I have enjoyed the process so much from planting the leaves and now the babies. If there is something you lost from larger plants I have, you are welcome anytime. Do you have a big mess to clean up? I know it will be a job reorganizing and getting everything situated again. A little TLC will get them back before you know it. Plus, the extra space will be fun to fill back in.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Not the same as you Jim, but when I had bugs I felt like I lost everything... and is how I lost most of my lables for my plants... You'll get your babies back one way or another....We will all see to that..
Hugs,
Susan

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Although I like pink,I am always drawn to oranges, corals, yellows and reds.Lin,the Sinn. you like is one I have ordered and as soon as I get it and can propagate from it,I will be glad to send you one.
Jim,
I can barely remember what I did this morning....LOL.I will find that thread sooner or later and then question you again.
Lynn

(Zone 1)

Jim: Welcome home! So sorry about your plants. I don't (well CAN'T) grow Strep's or I would gladly offer a few! Every Strep that's ever come into my house has succumbed within a couple of weeks. :( I guess they just don't like Florida ... or it might be they don't like me ... I wonder if anyone in Florida can grow those beauties?

Lynn: I am usually not drawn to coral colored blooms, unless they are a deep coral. That Sinningia Ozark Coral Freckles just really caught my eye! I don't ever pay much attention to pastel shades in Gessie's much. I love pinks, reds, yellows, purples ... ah heck, I guess I just love em' all ... especially if the color is vivid. I'm going to place an order for that Ozark Orange Freckles Sinn. as well as a couple of other's!

Williston, ND

They like to be kept cool ,if they are grown on the bottom shelve and you have air condioning you should be fine,My freind Thad grows a few streps and used to keep a lot more then he has now,so yes it can be done, but you have to meet thier conditions in the htter climates

JIM

(Zone 1)

hmm ... guess I could get rid of my cats and try them on a bottom shelf?

Nope, can't do that ... love my kitties too much, LOL. I can't keep any plants on the lower shelf of my stand unless they are contained in glass! One of the cats likes to chew.

Does your friend Thad live and grow Strep's in Florida? What part of the state? I know some areas (panhandle for instance) stay cooler than other areas.

Williston, ND

he lives in Tampa,or rather spring hill, you could enclose the bottom shelve, put up a screen,

(Zone 1)

hmm ... Tampa is even hotter in summer than we are over here on the east coast. Great idea of using screening of some sort. I might have to try rigging up screening around the bottom shelf of the plant stand ... something to think about! But, our thermostat is set at a constant 72 in winter and 76 in summer so I don't know if that is too warm for Strep's.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Lynn,
We have been using the wood stove and let me tell you how hot my house gets....LOL I have to go outside to cool off and my plants do just fine... In summer my houe is kept really cool and they do well then also.. We will get you growing streps yet...
Hugs,
Susan

(Zone 1)

Susan,

Not this Lin ... I'm not ready to try Strep's or Episcia's or AV's again yet! I have tried and just can't keep Strep's alive, sometimes I think it's just because I have way too many different kinds of plants to concentrate on each one's particular needs! I do best with plants that I can hang out in the trees or leave on the pool deck and just spray with the hose every week! The regular ole' common house plants! ^_^

Wytheville, VA

Jim, I 'll send you a list of what I have. most are starts, as that's what I've been up to all winter, starting over!. Think I have my drugs & bugs under control.

Williston, ND

sounds good thanks

Hi Jim,
I too have been the recipient of a big box of your leaves and I have babies from the majority of them coming out my ears! I can't ship right now but I'll find the list of what you sent me originally and you can see if there are ones you need or want back.

Along with leaves of any of my others you may see....

~Brenda

These are half of the leaves you sent me with babies that need potting up badly!! So please feel free!

My goodness, Brenda. They look so happy and healthy! Isn't it amazing how big they can get in a solo cup.

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

They are way too big and a few more of them have started to bloom from their leaf pots, I have GOT to get them potted up!! Story of our life's isn't it?? LOL

~Brenda
