Egg Sexing Experiment Results

Clarkson, KY

Well, in case you guys, my P&L buddies, didn't get the news. The egg sexing experiment was an abysmal failure. ZeeZ won. Everything else was waay off.
Did the spooky needle thingy and the chick flipping and the feathering (early/late)
Experiment proved definitively that nothing was proved -lolol. The two roos -AKA roo by both techniques and occasionally female by the flip method are both female. They both had yellow cheek spots. The two which were female by both counts and got feathers first -were male. Both grew out with barring from their BR parentage. One had a bad habit of picking on birds bigger than he and was found pecked to death about 2 mos back. I am assuming he was male as behavior and other earlier hatches indicate that the males end up barred...

So I ended up with 75% failure on spooky egg sexing, 87.5% failure rate on chick flipping, and 100% failure rate on feathering. Overall an impressive failure rate. Need to try this with bigger, more successful hatches.

posted on the other thread too so if this is redundant, sorry.

Well, there go all my theories. hmph!!!! Better come up with more ideas. I was sure the feather rate would prove valuable. ?????

Well.. if it's any consolation... I had a partridge Penedesenca flip as a girl.. named Alvin.. comb traditional carnation pennie style.. started to lay over as with the pullets.. then it straightens out for a couple of weeks.. then it lays over again.. or I thought.. Finally to get tail feathers that proved it Alvin was a roo.
I'm learning the only sure sexing method is time. :)

I was pretty amazed myself. Very seldom do you get results that bad...

Of course rates that high usually indicate a good area for study...

You got them 100% correct. From the pics I took on that thread. don't know which is more impressive. Getting them all right or seeing what they were in spite of my photographic genius...

Harm I did not know you had campines. they are beautiful aren't they. Mine are really filling out, for the longest time they were so trim and sleek. Now one year later they are really fattening up. Sorry about 4 roos and one henLOL. Haystack

Haystack i complained to Ideal and they sent me out 4 hens to makeup for the roo's.
They are to me the most beautiful chickens i have raised and i sold all mine last year.
I sold a trio to a family and i see the guy that bought them all the time he had told me the roo had got real mean but he wanted to keep them because they were so beautiful.
Well i saw him last week and the roo attacked him really bad and he had a gash on his arm and it looked bad. He said he didn't kill the roo but he sold him and the hens to someone else and told them the roo was mean.
