My BIL is going to be giving us some Pheasants he raises them for eating
I was wondering how much space they need and i've heard the males can be ruff on the hens.
Should i get 2 or 3 females instead of one?
Do they set or do you have to incubate their eggs?
Pheasant Questions
Well, I looked. Not because I know anything or have anything of value to add...
Ya....me either, just nosey. Sorry. I know nothing about pheasants. I am sure someone does though. I saw pictures of someone beautiful pheasant on another thread awhile ago. Good luck Harm.
Thanks for stopping by yall come back now ya hear LOL
biskitsngravy. wantsomehospitality. stopinanthzzallshesayz....
Kitchens closed all i got is some cheese popcorn and some sweet tea
We raised them whe I was a kid for many years.
First, they like a lot of room and if you can build the pen around some natural cover like a bush it's great. They will need a cover over the pen as they are good flyers. Too may in a small pen will make them peck each other. One rooster can handle several hens and they aren't as hard on the hens as chickens as their breeding season is short. They will not sit their own eggs in captivity. The must be removed on a twice daily basis and incubated or hatched under a silkie. The silkie method is perfect as then she raises them for you.
They don't roost, but like places to hide. We used to place several bales of straw in the pen and they would hide next to them.
The aren't the brightest birds andwill fly against the wire of the pens when startled. Our seened to calm down a bit when we added a few banties to the mix for some reason. They require high protein game crumbles ans in the wild they eat mostly bugs.
They are beautiful birds, especially when you get into the goldens and indigos. We raised mostly ringnecks and I think they are the flightiest of all the breeds.
Hi Harm: I know nothing about pheasants, except they are beautiful birds. And they are delicious. I had also heard that the cocks are rough and ornery. I'm sure you'll be up to the challenge though. Good luck and look forward to pic's. Hay
Great discussion here. My DH just asked about them also, well me he was wanting to know if I could get some. Them and quail.
My brief experience with quail is they are too stupid to jump over a 2x4 to get to water... lost some from dehydration. Japanese quail, if that makes any difference.
Cute, but no brains a'tall.
Thanks all i was thinking of selling my self blues and putting these in the ground coop area it's about 8x10 and completely covered.
Sounds like it will be perfect and i can get at least 4 hens to go with the male.
We will be raising them and possibly eating them too.
jylgaskin these are just ring necks nothing fancy
Sounds like their like quail and a little flighty but i can handle that and i could raise them under a broody banty.
Thanks i know i have just what i need to get them ^_^
