Hi Kathy & Karen,

Thanks for the compliments. I have something to show y'all. Possibly one of the biggest buds I've seen in some time. Maybe it will pop tomorrow.

Creole Lady again when she opened. Now to see if she fades. It's cooler today so maybe she will hold on to the color a little longer.

Oh dear, Saffron Moon is growing on me. :-(

I really need a 12 step program for hibiscus addicts.

Nice photos Robert and I agree with everyone about Creole Lady. Looks like its a great growing bush also, just like Swamp Music. Swamp Music must consistently be a good grower.

Robert. . .

You do understand that showing all of these magnificent blooms is like waving candy in front of a baby!

Hello To All;

Remember me? I'm the Beginner just getting hooked on Hibbies!

Okay - question...I had four Hibbies that made it through the winter each in varying conditions.....but made it through all the same.

My #1 best Hibbie actually is showing 3 blooms forming! But it has been accumulating yellow leaves as of late. Is that a sign that it needs water?

We've been pretty dry as of late, but thank goodness yesterday started a 3 day steady rain...so if that is the case....it might be okay now.

The other 3 ....I'm just gonna baby along.

I found the Cajun Hibiscus at the nursery today which are supposed to thrive in 8b. How close can I plant to my "Non-8B" Hibbies?

I want to plant 2 hardy hibbies next to my non-hardy ones....and then find another non-hardy Hibbie to plant in a microclimate that I think will do it well....next to the house (brick wall) and small Bird of Paradise. (Any color suggestions next to the Bird?).

Okay- that's more like 9 questions....forgive me!

:)

Hugs,
Mary

My hibiscus typically wind up with yellow leaves when they've had too much water, or when the moisture level has been too inconsistent (let them get too dry and then watered them a ton). I think if you plant them in the ground vs keeping them in containers as I have to you'll have less trouble with that since the moisture levels won't fluctuate as much.

Thank you for your reply! I think that might be it....it has been very dry here lately...

Hope all this rain doesn't make it (the yellow leaves) worse....it's raining for about 3 days...

All the Hibiscus are in the ground.....

I usually don't worry too much about the yellow leaves, they'll drop off and be replaced by new ones. Where I'd worry is if they start to look like they're drooping and wilting a lot, if they do that after getting a lot of moisture then that means they've had too much water and in the ground there's not much you can do about it. But unless it rains for weeks on end or your yard is flooding and they're sitting in a puddle they should be OK, they like a decent amount of moisture. That's one of the reasons I keep mine in pots--the rest of my garden is mostly xeriscape so they wouldn't do well on the amount of water that the garden beds get.

Okay- Thank You for your help!

It did seem odd that the One Hibiscus of the Four that survived the winter that was the Strongest, had the problem with the yellow leaves...

Now it's showing 3-4 blooms developing...

I'm really excited because DH said (when I bought the Hibiscus) that they would all die and not make it through the winter....

Thanks a bunch,

Mary

Robert, very beautiful hibiscus as always. Robert, I was wondering do you compete in hibiscus competition shows in texas. I would also like to know the names of any of your crossing and how long did they take to put out there first bloom.

I take that back....

The Strongest Hibbie has 10 or more blooms on it! Wow - more hibbies will def be planted in that microclimate area.... :)
