I've had the same old crock pot since I graduated high school (20 years ago!), and I made everything in it. Last year it broke (at a DG Round-up, no less) so I had to buy a new one. I loved the idea of it, but the reality is disappointing. It's a Rival Crock-Pot Smart Pot.
First of all, it has digital push-buttons instead of a dial. I thought multiple settings would be great. Instead, I discovered that every time the power flickers off, the crock pot doesn't come back on. It happens almost daily here, but I never thought about that buying a crock pot. I came home to a cold crock pot, and half-cooked, spoiled meat.
Second, it has all these settings, from 4 hours/Hot to 10 hours/slow. All well and good, but even on the 10 hour/slow setting, it boils hard the whole time. And at the end of 10 hours, it shuts off. No going to "warm" and holding until we're ready to eat. And no more starting my Italian beef the night before, and letting it cook all night and all day. It was nearly black and crispy after 6 hours.
Maybe it would work well for soup or chili or something with a lot of liquid, but so far none of my usual crock pot meals have turned out in the new pot. What a disappointment. I bought it last summer, and have no idea where the receipt might be, so no chance of returning it, either.
I want to go back to my good old simple high/low/off dial setting crock pot! Sniffle.
OK, I'm done now.
Angie
I now officially *hate* my new crock pot
