I just took this photo of one of the Serama eggs in my incubator at day 4. It shows the "spidery" veining of the developing embryo which some of you newbies to incubation may have heard of. These veins will help the embryo to draw nutrients out of the yolk, if I understand that process correctly. Hope this helps someone out.
Spidery veining in developing egg
Wonderful picture!
How many Serama do you have now?
Great pic - really shows how it actually looks in those eggs. I remember the first time I was doing candling and was clueless as to what I should look for. When I first saw veins like that, I nearly dropped the egg I was so excited!
Maineiac hows that top hatch doing with the blanket?
I am the wind.....or I am windy...something like that.
30 Breeders! What are the range of colors?
I have two Serama chicks! A roo and a pullet about a third of the roos size. Very tiny. The eggs came from two different breeders. Do you know what the genetics of size are with Serama, Scott?
Cat- I have such a mix of colors, lots of dark hens tho', I have birchen, wheaton, red pyle, white, chocolate, laced, and many others. I don't know the first thing about Serama genetics. I haven't heard of anyone studying them yet either. Supposedly - small birds can produce small birds, and larger birds can occasionally as well. I have all my breeders free-ranging together so it's a real hodge-podge of copulation going on there. Guess it's kind of a chicken orgy? Glad to hear you got some Seramas. If you want some eggs from mine let me know and I will set you up with some. PM me for details.
Harmony - That top hatch is my fav bator. It cleans so easily and is very consistent. I made the blanket from a piece of mylar bubble-wrap, which was leftover from a building project here. Construction guys and heating/plumbing guys have the stuff. They use it to wrap houses before vinyl siding goes on houses, and wrapping heat pipes, etc.
maineiac what do you keep the humidity at and how much water do you add to the tray??
Scott, I'll be in touch!:0)
Well show us your Seramas Scott! I love Seramas.. I have one.. LOL I named her Dot cause she was just a speck... tiny.. I love it.. (not sure if it's a roo yet)
Would love to see your Serama pics!
Great picture of candled egg!!! Nice veins. I just had my first three hatches for this year. I love candling. But that is a great pic. Sure does help out when trying to determine what is a good egg and what is not. Thanks. And I am with Catscan and ZZ, picture would be great.
Harmony - I keep the water full. The Top hatch holds a full liter of water which is one of the best features, as you don't end up filling it every two days like the styro bators. I keep 3 of the 4 plugs in the top, which maintains the humidity at 45% for me. I take the turner out for the last three days and put in the last plug, which gets me up over 55%. Seems to do the trick....I am buying a sportsman incubator from twin city supply this week ($659 and free shipping until March 31 www.twincitypoultrysupplies.com/store). I just can't function any longer with three (or five) small incubators anymore. I will get some Serama pics up in a minute....Scott
I'm melted..
Oh that tiny roo.. the first roo and earl just melted my heart! Soooo cute!
I wasn't gonna get anymore.. Oh NOOO!
Too late ZZ, you have seen them. :o
I didn't think I needed the goggles!
Silly me..
Always wear your goggles, ZZ. They make quite stylish ones these days, and there is no excuse not to.
Oh i didn't think i would need the googles oh too late **SIGH**
Oh thanks for the info on the water level i was curious how others do their Top Hatches
Hey Maineiac!! Do you ever ship fertile Serama egg's? If so how much do you charge for them? Loved the Pic's such stately little things. Haystack
Yes Haystack, I do. Please D-Mail me and I will give you the details. thanks...Scott
