Hello, I've went back 8 pages no post really addresses the issue of pecking, what causes it and what can be done to stop it. I in the past had problems with it and did not find a cure I myself do not raise chickens now because of where I live however my brother and sister-inlaw do and now are begining to have the same problem, the chickens are "Buffs" large light brown layers they have no Roo so he is not doing it their just pecking, any input is appreciated my "egg lady" is not happy (my young niece who feeds the chickens and gets the egg money) daddy gets the feed bill, LOL.

I found this web page and it sounds right to me. I know if you have too many birds in a small space, they will pick at each other. I got some RIReds from a lady who had over 200 birds on less than an acre of land and they still don't have any tail feathers.

Pecking is usually the result of being overcrowed, also when using a light for the evening hrs it should be a red light. Sometimes it is the result also of hens who think they own the nest and don't want another hen in that specific nest. Like little kids fighting over toy's that are meant for all to play with.
