On a lighter note...

Laporte, CO(Zone 4b)

I did get to spend a very pleasant morning with Trouble and Minnies first 'mom' this morning. It was very nice to take my mind off Athena- it is hard to drive by the barn and not see her come out to see where I am going.
I am speaking of the woman who originally bred Trouble and who sold her and Minniie to me (and Athena in the oven) a couple of years ago. She was really disappointed to hear of the loss of Athena, as she was shaping up to be a real star in the babies of Peppys Bright King, her stallion. As I stated in the previous post- they lost King to ruptured intestine in early December. It was like a double whammy- knowing that we would not have the opportunity to try to create another personality like my two baby girls again.

The very last baby that King sired, however, had just arrived 2 weeks ago, and is also a filly. Coal black from the tip of her nose to the end of her tail, and monster sized- even bigger than Athena was at the same age. 'Course the mare she was out of is about 4 inches taller than Trouble too! It is exciting, even with the sadness of Athena's death- because this is the mare I originally wanted to buy from Bobbie, and at that time she wouldn't think about selling her. But now, I guess things are a bit changed. They are giving up the breeding business for good, and all but 2 or 3 horses have to go. This is the last mare/foal pair she has, and with the horse market the way it is here- it is hard to sell an unbroke broodmare and a baby who is supposed to be paint, but ended up with no markings at all.
I love the mare- she is personable and gorgeous (well- potentially- no horse looks great in February in Colorado) and the baby is beautiful! She has already been christened Shadow because she was born at night and Bobbie couldn't see anything but her eye with the flashlight in the dark. I could tell after half an hour she is another King baby- curious and trusting- well as much as two weeks old can be.
Maybe I am nuts- maybe it is like rebounding from a relationship- but I know I want another of that stallions get. And I know I want another filly too. With him gone I feel like I need to keep that bloodline around somehow, even if Bobbie can't anymore. She has told me she has had a couple of people who have come back again for babies after they get the first one. I guess one local trainer told her he had another one of her colts in, and "Thanks for the easy money" as the horse was so easy to deal with - apparently they had started on some ground work and ended up riding him an hour later.
Bobbie has said she really wants the pair to go to us, and is willing to work with us on price- so I guess I am going to talk with hubby and see what he says- I am willing to bet he wants a sister to Athena too. I would take a whole pasture full of them like her.

Sure would be fun if she stays black!
