Sugar Land, TX

Can someone ID this sandpiper for me? I am baffled by the black streak behind it's eye.

Thanks,
Chris

Thanks again Resin! You are the king of bird IDs as far as I am concerned. Grey Plover, huh? It's not even listed in my Sibley guide. Mystery solved.

Thanksagain,

Sibley has it, he just spells it differently, Black-bellied Plover. Same bird, though!

Here are a few more bird names that Resin might say David Sibley spells differently....How many can you ID with their USA names?

Bewick's Swan, Goosander, Great Northern Diver, Hen Harrier, Sand Martin, Two-barred Crossbill

Calgary, AB(Zone 3b)

Okay, I'll guess without reaching for the bird guides or googling:
Trumpeter swan
White-fronted goose
Common loon
Harrier
Cliff swallow
White-winged crossbill

And I'm really rusty, too, I admit, LOL!

Some of them arguable . . . ;-) Quite possible that future species splits will result in Bewick's and Trumpeter Swans being split, ditto Hen Harrier and Northern Harrier, and Two-barred and White-winged Crossbills.

Goosander / Common Merganser and Sand Martin / Bank Swallow are also polytypic but probably less likely to get split as the differences aren't large. But Grey / Black-bellied Plover and Great Northern Diver / Common Loon are monotypic, so definitely won't be split.
