Laptop shutting off after a few seconds

Does anyone know if a laptop shuts off on its own when the battery is dead and needs to be replaced?
It is a Compaq Evo N610c on XP.
I have a laptop that only starts up for about 5 seconds before turning back off, its very frustrating!
Anybody have some input or maybe had it happen to them?
When it does this it is plugged into AC power as well.
