Saving seeds on Squash

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

How far apart should I plant them if I want to save seed this year?

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

A minimum of a quarter mile. If you planted several cultivars, you should bag and handpollinate if you wish to save seeds. Squash are insect pollinated and will cross pollinate squash within thier flight patterns.

Well dang. So seed saving and multiple varieties of squash probably won't work well on a small homestead? The thought of relocating my squash a quarter mile away...

OH WEll, Forget that! Good grief. That's too much work, I spent a fortune on seeds this year, or perhaps I do that yearly, and I just feel the pain of the spending worse this year. I wanted to try to save some seeds. but I'm not going to have room to plant them that far LOL Nor do I want to self pollinate them. Thanks Farmer Dill. Gosh I just hate that.

Has anybody else around here saved seed and not planted so far appart and had success with them not cross pollinating?

I just made a nother big purchase from gourmet seeds for some unusual squash varieties. I guess, I'll just keep buying them. And may be get lucky once in a while to do a few trading also.

I just thought after my post ----well if I planted a couple of plants waay far away and only went over to harvest -1 variety each year -siiigh. Or saved seeds from 1 plant raised under cover, just keeping enough to last 3 years then a different variety next year....I'm so tired of having to buy basic stuff.

Farmer Do Watermelon's cross with cantelope type melons?

I bought some savor melon seeds this year and wanted to save seed cause they were Rediculously expensive seed.

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Cantaloupes only cross with Cucumis melo. That of course includes common cantaloupes, Honeydews, Spanish melons, Armenian cucumbers etc. In general only plants within a species cross. So when in doubt look them up in Plantfiles. Watermelons are Citrullus lanatus. No danger of them crossing with anything normally found in a vegetable garden.

Thanks as always!!
