I took this picture in Miami at the Fairchild Tropical Garden. I love this idea and am trying to recreate it here is San Diego becase if we have something here in abundance is sun. I would like to receive recommendations for 4 - 5 sun loving broms, please!
The pic is not very good but If you recognize any of the plants on it, let me know.
Thanks
Sun loving bromeliads
The red ones look like Neoregelia 'Fireball' or one of their cultivars, and the stripey ones look like Aechmea orlandiana, or cultivars like 'Bert'

This is a NZ site, but has a list of sun hardy Broms, so have a browse. It might help.

Thanks Weedwoman Sue (and maybe one day you will see the Shade House in San Diego). BTW there is also a large succulent garden and a rose garden nearby for your pleasure! Oh, and a palm grove! And ...
you get the idea...
Large? I reckon it gets Humungous! He he
Hi Dale, the third pic looks like Aechmea blanchetiana, and the forth photo looks like Alcantarea imperialis 'Rubra'.
Ohh, sorry dale, but without a flower it doesn't make it easy to ID a green leafed one. The top ones are Alcantarea vinicolor, or so the label says. he, he (I cheated)
Yeah mate! Neoregelias! he, he. In fact, I don't know if they are, but most likely!
Could it be Neo. Spectabilis? (painted finger nail)
I think you are right, Plantsforpeg. Taking your clue, I have further defined it as Neoregelia spectabilis Rubra. Every picture I pull up looks just like my plant. Thanks for the help!
Jim
You are welcome. I have lots of the painted finger nail.
Hawk's plant looks a lot like Neoregelia cruenta 'Sun King' - it's a big Neo and looks great in nearly full sun as long as it gets enough humidity. I'll also second the Aechmea blanchetiana as a sun lover.

Dale, I have such trouble growing fireball. I have one so stragly right now that I am embarrased to post a pic. What's your trick?
Yes, surely not Sun King - I didn't realize it was that small.

I had no idea Broms would get so large. I have never seen anything like that!
nomosno,
All alcantarea do well in full sun in CA and FL. plus you get years and years out of them.
Also, Dyckia seem to be popular out there because they are so xerophytic. If you need a mail-order supplier for some, let me know!
