Hummingbird Bush, Anisacanthus quadrifidus var. wrightii

Hebron, KY

Can anyone tell me how this would grow in a container? I'm in zone 6 and it's not hardy for me but can anyone tell me what size (height and width) of a container if I grow it in one? I would grow it on a concrete patio that gets full sun. Any and all information is very appreciated!

I love to add plants to delight the Hummers and Butterflies each Spring to Fall!

Love all your pics of it in the PF!

Thanks!

I don't see why it wouldn't work, I would say a 5 gallon container would be big enough.
Good luck, it is a lovely plant. Here is a link to learn more about it.

Josephine,

Thanks for the link and your info! Hope I can get a plant or two from mail order! If so, I'll let you know how they do during our growing season!

I have 2 of the 5 gallon pots already! My neighbor behind me had trees from the nursery in them and was going to throw them out after planting the trees. Good thing I asked what they were going to do with the pots!

Great containers for flowering plants!

I just took another look at the pots on the patio. (didn't get all the soil out of them last Fall). I'm pretty sure they may be larger than 5-gallon! They may be 10-gallon! :-)

Wish I knew the measurements regarding the 5-gal. and the 10-gal. and larger pots!

The five gallon pots I have measure 12 inches tall, and 10 inches across the top.
I hope that helps.

Thanks Josephine,

I just went outside, with the help of the patio light and measured the across the top and the height.

The top is 19", including the two 2 inch lip on each side (inside is 17"). The height is 19".

So, this has to be a 10-gal. or more pot. Maybe I can google the size of a 10-gal. to find if it is a 10-gal. or even larger pot.

just found a link on google that a 15 gal is the 'closest', so that is what I have, so wonder they've been great container pots (even though they're black).

15 Gallon: 14.7 gallon 18-1/2" x 17"

Those plants should do really well in those pots! :-)

That link you posted, stated that "they should do well in patio pots", so that's good for us 'up north'. :-)

Thanks for all your help!

I think I'll go outside tomorrow in the daylight and measure again to make sure.

I wonder if it might be a 20 gal

They have the meas. for a 20 as 20 9/16 inch x 17 inch
