Bird ID help please!

(Zone 6b)

I live in NYC. Today I saw a bird that I've never seen before...

He was somewhat small...smaller than a titmouse, but bigger than a finch.

His overall color was a very uniform tan...similar to the overall shade of mourning dove. But again, the bulk of this tan color was very uniform, unlike a mourning dove.

He had black rings around his eyes. His beak appeared to be tan and somewhat thin and somewhat elongated.

From the side, the edges of his wings were black, and the rest of the wing was black and white striped...somewhat similar to say a downy woodpecker's black/white stripes.... and it seemed that along his throat, and maybe along the edges of his wings, I saw a slight tinge of yellow.

The bird was solitary.

He was very taken with my thistle tube feeder.

Any ideas??

Thanks!!!

Hi yip, This doesn't remind me of your description too much but could it have been a

Pine Siskin?

Or an Evening Grosbeak? Check all the pics.

Maybe immature (first-winter) Yellow-rumped Warbler?

Def not pine siskin. The siskin's brown shades are very mottled. My bird was a very uniform light tan (other than other colors I mentioned).

Def not evening grosbeak. The grosbeak has way more yellow. My bird had very subtle tinges of yellow. Also, the grosbeak does not have mutiple black/white stripes as my bird did....

def not Warbler either. That bird is more white/black. My bird was mainly a very light TAN. The wings only, and the back tail wings, were black/white striped. But his body was light tan, with very subtle tinges of yellow at throat, and edges of wing...very subtle yellow....

Someone told me it might be a Winter Goldfinch, and yeah, when I googled...that does seem to be the closest thing thus far to what I saw.... :-)

That's good yip. I was going to mention trying whatbird.com by putting in your info and seeing what they come up with.
