Bob, I've had a lot of fun with C. arnstrongii photos. This is one of my favourites. The fact that some of them develop free-form trunks opens up a world of photographic possibilities.

that is a weird photo... like some deep sea creature. Awesome!

I came across your name Geoff, sorry for calling you Bob, but I'm sure you'd understand.

Put that image up on a web site (non-gardening) and asked people to guess what it was. Some of the answers were weirder than the photo. But that's how some of the trunks are shaped. I'm not an expert on cycads but I've seen a fair few and none of them exhibit the "free spirit" that C armstrongii sometimes do. Although 90% conform and behave like normal cycads.

The one with the double trunk curled I've tried to find again to get a similar shot as this last one but can't find it. I go out walking early morning in the dark and take photos of whatever. But going cross-country with out tracks or landmarks means I rarely travel the same ground twice. You can see from that photo that daylight had caught up with me. Somewhere "out there" is a fantastic photo opportunity waiting for someone to find it again.
