Are you a plant junkie?

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

Just wondering, are you a member of the Societies like African Violet, Gesneriads, Begonias, etc. Who's belonged the longest?

Are plant junkies supposed to have time for groups and clubs? I must be doing something wrong. I always heard that when junkies go to meetings someone tries to get them to kick the habit. I like this habit. Just keep those groups and meetings away. Well, maybe I need a small meeting, a 6 step program might get me out of the co-op forum. That is where we junkies hang out. Is there ever an African Violets and Gesneriads co-op?

what I meant was the African Violet Society of America or American Begonia Society where you belong and get a magazine with pictures of new flowers , ideas on everything, like 4 times a year.

I belong to the AVSA and the LSAVC, both for less than a year. I've sent in my membership app. for the DAVS, but haven't received confirmation on that one yet.

Are those pictures you post your artwork?

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

So most of you love the magazines like me. I have most of my AV mags, I just joined the Begonia andf Gesneriads.
The pictures I use are ones I've gathered from the net or cards. I have a large collection of cards that go back to the 20s.My favorites are the greeting cards from the 30s to 50s.

Those vintage cards are lovely. How about a few photos of your gesneriads?

I don't have one blooming yet. They are fairly new and besides my camera won't work with my upgraded PC

I belong to the Gessie society, gesneriad hybridizers association, Av society, Begonia society and rock gardening society. I have also at times belonged to the American horticultural society, the cacti and succulent society , the geranium society & New England wildflower society. I tend to join the national organizations as there are NO local groups for me to attend. It is also a great way to have access to seed and I LOVE to grow from seed. I did belong to a local C&S society and LOVED it--but have since moved and about that time it was disbanded because there were no new members. I recently joined Mauro Pexioto's Brazil Plant Support group, was kinda spendy (my holiday gift to myself;) but does bring 18 packs of seed per year.

Gran, I order seed from Mauro all the time........a lot of seed. Could you tell me something about his Plant Support group. It couldn't be any more expensive than what I am currently spending on seed a year.
Thanks

You bet-- it is a yahoo group, Brazilplants. There are different levels of membership, the lowest is $60 a year and entitles you to 6 free pkgs of seed 3 times a year--or you can get them all at once. You also get a 50% discount on purchased seed, making them roughly $2 pkt at the current exchange rate. Members get to order from new species before they are made available to the public too. Actually pays for itself quickly. The monies are used to support Mauro's plant preservation activities in Brazil. There is a break down of those costs on the group. There is not a lot of chatter on the group either, so not hard to keep up with.

Gran, I am thrilled to hear this news. With a 50% discount and the current exchange with the Euro, I was paying almost 4.00 a packet the last order.
Could you dmail me with the actual address because I am computer challenged^_^?

Gran,
I don't know how to attach a picture to a Dmail, but here are some of my cacti and succulents.

Gh is a square-- the above photo is actually our porch, at the end of it are steps, you make a right turn and step down 2 ft and this is the view from there.

Great pictures! I wish I had a GH or a sunporch, instead of just my basement.I have some Begonias and foliage plants, too.A lot of my space gets taken up by things I drag in for the winter.

What did you do for heat in the greenhouse, Gran, when the power went off? Your plants look good.

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

We kept the woodstove cranking and we carried a bucket of coals out of the woodstove every few hours on the cold nights and sat them in the floor. On the worst nights we also used a little propane camp stove. The coldest it got in the lower part was 41- 42° on a 16° night. Some nights no extra heat was needed. I did carry all my begonias inside every night from the lower part as they prefer not to go below 50° for too long--just in case.

I don't belong to any societies at all, and there are no 'clubs' near me as I live in a very rural area. (I surely wish there were, though!)
BUT....I am, indeed, a 'plant junkie'.(Ü)

South, TX

I am a member of the AVSA and I go to my African Violet club meeting every month.

My husband and I used to go to the Botanical Garden Orchid meetings, we will go back again. It was the same night as my bird meetings.

I am in a very old garden club.

I am also on the board of my Homeowner's Association. I am in charge of our landscaping and newsletter. Just started that position. Not a club, but we do have monthly meetings and I do a lot of emailing and thinking about that.
