These small have started coming to our garden in the past week (it's mid-February) here in Los Angeles. They appear in groups of five or so, and are attracted to a bunch of pet rabbit forage hay.
Sometimes I see a bird of similar size with a reddish breast with them. I have seen this bird eating the blossoms on an ornamental plum tree. Could this be the same bird, different age/sex?
I hope the photo is useful. The best I could manage with my camera's zoom.

I would say House Sparrow too.
Yes, House Sparrow - your photo shows a male (black bib) and a female. The male appears to be collecting nesting material. The ones with reddish breasts are some other species, possibly House Finch.

Thanks everyone. Over breakfast I'll nonchalantly comment on the house sparrows gathering nest material and see if anyone calls my bluff.
