Moving onions?

Stoppe dby a friend of mine's house the other day and he had taken plastic fifty gallon barrels and cut them in half and was usign them as planter.

He has thes eplanters all over the place and they are slam packed ful of onions. Seems he planted little onion bulbs and now they all are abotu the size of bunching onions.

he wanted to knwo if he could take them out and replant in the ground and also if he want sthem to make big onions, should he only replant the now bunchign looking type only half way down the white part into the ground.

Said I would ask, cuz I have no idea. I pulled a few to eat as is, salt shaker and bunching , yummmm, but figrue I better ask before I pull all his onions and eat them LOL

I dug and replanted small onions like that and they did ok. They didn't get large, because I just didn't want them to go to waste, when I did it. We ate them at bunching size and I cooked with them.

I think if he wants large ones he should try planting shallow. He has plenty to experiment with :o)

Can they be planted all the way down where they are now and stil make big onions or do ya plant them halfway stickign out.

Well, I would plant to the top of the round part of the bulb, if it has started a bulb shape. As it grows it will sort of uncover itself. By summers end, most of the bulb should be exposed to the sun.

Spacing them 4'' or more will give bigger onions.

Thanks Billy. Wil tell him what ya said that is if he has any to plant. I love bunchign onions and his crop may disappear before they get to ground. Wonder if I cna say rabbits did it and get away with it. LOL
