What Size Container to Use

Canyon Lake, TX(Zone 8b)

It has been ask more than once about the size container to use for certain veggies. Here is a table put together by the Ohio State University I thought many of you would find helpful.

At least it makes for some interesting reading. Have fun.

Jerry: Thank you I read that and it was very informative.

Great info, Jerry. I have a tendency to try and put plants in cramped conditions. Trying to break that habit this year.

Yes, thanks, that is a good page. Here's another one:

Kylaluaz: Yes, that is a great link there also. Thanks for sharing it, I really need to see this stuff. I'm a beginner to all types of gardening. I was looking through some catalogues this week and ordering some flowers. I chose Begonias and Renanculus to grow this spring, I usually stick with canna lilies as they are no fuss and easy to grow; but wanted something a tad different. I really liked the Peonies; but, they, from what I read, are definately not for the beginner; but beautiful indeed.

Well, you're welcome and good luck! You will find plenty of good advice and info and help around here. I've been gardening for decades and I learn something pretty much every time I log on here, real useful stuff, too. ;-)

I've done container gardening before but this year is the first time I am going to try a lot of vegetables in containers -- so here's wishin us newbies luck!

Kyla: I have some earthboxes and garden patch boxes and have made some homemade ones that I intend on giving a good try this Spring myself at growing some veggies. Not confident enough with my growing skills or in the soil around here to do any other kind of gardening just yet. Maybe one day right? LOL

Definitely one day! ;-)

Kylaluaz: I bet you don't have the bugs to fight that we do here in Florida. LOL

No, don't have that. Bigger eaters, tho, deer and rabbits. They are the main reason I am not trying to grow veggies in the ground this year! Upstairs, on the deck, no deer and rabbits will venture. Bugs would tho....... But! You all get rain! In the summer! LOL!

I still feel like a beginner although I have played at gardening, mostly flowers, for about 4 years now and have made some decisions about pot size. My first year I tried growing a lot of stuff in 0ne gallon containers. Some things did OK. Some didn't. Watering is a constant trying to grow most stuff in small containers. Then I noticed how many plants people were stuffing into such things as hanging baskets. And a Texas A&M article on how to plant combination pots had the same thing, Lots of plants in one of those combination plots. The Proven Winners website also showed lots of plants crammed into one pot. So I figger if its good enough for them, its good enough for me. In a 5 gallon container, Im going to plant one tomato plus one small sized marigold (tomato's are supposed to like them stinky things) and if there is any space left where I can poke holes with my finger, I'm gonna stick some bunching onions in there. Might poke in a couple of garlic cloves in there too. Onions and garlic are supposed to be good companion plants and repel some bugs. If some tomato worm takes a sniff of that container, I hope he gets confused and moves on.

Jay this is so funny. We must be reading some of the same stuff. I was thinking for each grow bag there would be an onion, garlic, marigold, basil, and oh yeah, must not forget the tomato.

Kerrville, TX

Yeah Jerry..........I forgot the basil.........they stink and repel bugs too. Any self respecting tomato should appreciate company like that.

Crestview, FL

Didn't know about the onions and garlic; knew about the basil; but thought you could just plant small pots of it around the tomato plant not in the same container with it?

Jay: Have you grown any peonies yet? They are supposed to stink real pretty. And look pretty too.

Is there a place regarding what size grow bags to use as well as the containers or would you use the same size, example, 1/2 gal planter is equal to the 1/2 gallon grow bag? I have been reading and reading and googling and I may just be missing it. Any help would be great. Thanks! Laura H
