Goat people...... Have you used or heard of an injection to prevent and treat foot scald and foot rot in goats? I know there is something out there and wonder if it works.

goat injection for foot scald and foot rot
You should talk to Fran i believe she has goats
Fran is right now, at this very minute researching packing the hoof with garlic and comfrey, I am reading for someone else.. right now I do not understand it..
I have little clues and have never had a hoof problem (yet, knock on wood) But have a few goats coming in with a problem, so I am studing up on it and some courses of treatment.
I will update as I go along and hope others will too.. I will need the knowledge also.
Have you tried fiascofarm?! Don't know anything about injections...
ewww, I hate the thought of injections.. and especially into an infected foot..
This person has tried many different things with this one goat.. all the others responded except this buck.. I think he's just testing her skills to the limit.
I personally believe whatever you choose to do, as with anything in your life.. it MUST be done with commitment, dedication and consistancy!
Looks like I found the information I needed. It is a vaccination called Volar, actually made for sheep but used off label with good results for goats. I like injections if they work, and the injection site is not the foot. I have used hoof n heel for years but it is only a temporary fix. I will give this a try.
could you share your info here Blue? I am always up for learning??
Fran, This is the where I found the article concerning the problem. http://www.tennesseemeatgoats.com/articles2/hoofrot,hoofscald06.html When I have a goat with just a slight problem, I spray Hoof n Heel between the toes once a day. Usually, if the hoof has been properly trimmed beforehand, the malady is gone in a few days. Unfortunately, I have a stubborn case with one of my goats and that is why I am going to try this vaccine.
We bought a buck one time whose's hooves hadn't been trimmed in ages and he had hoofrot. We used the Hoof 'N Heel as well(bought at Hoeggers) and it worked very well. I beleive they also sell a goat boot that keeps the hoof clean while healing and is supposed to cushion the hoof as well.
Hoegger's remedy for Foot Scald is: 1 pint Rubbing Alcoho and 2 tablespoons 343 Terramycin Powder. Mix and pour into spray bottle, apply liberally to affected ares between the toes. Also you can give in addition 4cc of Biomycin. I've never had a problem w/ foot scald but thought maybe this could be helpful to someone.
I have a set of those little blue rubber "goat Booties". They help IF you can keep them on the goats feet, that's the trick. I ended up actually having to tape them to the leg when I put them to use on one of my sheep.
Sounds abit annoying to use.
Sue---surely you know by now anything is annoying to use on goats !! lol.
lol! They certainly have a mind of their own. The trick is to make them think it was their idea not yours!
Fran - how are the goats? Did they arrive yet?
Geez Claire.. they arrived today.. LOL at 4:10 pm.. ya gotta give me a minute.. lol
their hooves look bad.. but after hearing the story, I think a dry pasture and daily care will clean it up in no time. I hope!!
They sure have been through the ringer.. not that you can really tell by looking but one looks a bit roundish maybe in the mother-way. all the females have been exposed. they all look under nurished.. oh yea, that was 1 small bale of hay a week! The buck has the worse hooves and is thin.. but not for the owners not trying.. it was just a bad situation for all.. I only hope we can get them back to good health.
Tonight, they are warm & dry! oh yea.. and fed!
OMG they are WONDERFUL Fran!! How exciting is that!! Can't wait for more pix, etc. Are any of the does bred? What is their kidding time or do you even know? Do you have a shearing appointment set up? Should be made for mid to late March. No feed for 24 hours prior to shearing.
Cute as buttons!
The owners are shearers.. thats their business.. so they will come back and shear.. there are 6 females and all have been exposed.. since October.. so.. doing the math.. March-ish..
They are very sweet and allow you (read, NO FUSS) to lay them down to work on their feet.. and stay laying down with no wiggling.. very unlike my pygmy!
SOO, I will do a little.. umm.. fem-trim.. just in case on the gals..
You might want to keep me in mind for a guard lama..
Hmmm...tricky, you don't want to shear within 3 weeks of kidding if possible.
yea, thats what they said.. so not sure what they are planning just yet.. think they are playing it by ear and I am watching them right now..
